An interesting afternoon spent at DVLA's offices in Chester with my recent purchase.
Bought as a 1960 R60 with a replaced engine, a quick check suggested it's from a 1956 R68.
Had a letter from the DVLA a few weeks ago saying there's a discrepency with the registered chassis number, and the one the MOT tester had written on the MOT.
Arranged a visit ti Chester, and their man tells my the chassis is from a 1958 bike, which was registered with a 750cc engine  ( the replacement is a 600).
Ah well thinks I, so the bike is 2 years older than I thought.
DVLA bod then says 'you lucky so-and-so, have you seen the registration plate which goes with the chassis?' and shows my the info he's got from Swansea.
The bike I bought - or thought I'd bought - had had the registration sold and transfered some years ago, and log book was marked as Not Transferable'
The plate I've now got is valued at just over £2,000

Result !!

Doubt I'll sell it but it's cheered me up no end.

Nice one Bill :)

So is it an R60 or R68 ,

Does it have a plunger frame ? or the Earles frame

Cheers Graham

Log book isn't model specific, just says BMW motorcycle, the colour and engine cc, but going off the chassis number - to which the Registration mark is assigned, it's now a 1958 R69.
What the 750 cc engine which was in it before, I've no idea, never thought to ask the DVLA man what the engine number was, but it shouldn't have been fitted as original, as the R69 was 600 cc, unless there were some 750 version. Any one any ideas about that?

There are some pictures of it here

Was'nt bought from a certain Cheshire dealer was it. A few years ago it was not unknown to have a selection of bikes which mysteriously changed their Id's so that the newly attached Reg No could be sold on. (before the DVLA started selling them ) I heard of one bike with about twenty frame numbers on it. :rob

All R69's are 600cc Earles Forked bikes
Bills is/was [imho] a police special...R69

The 750cc engine could have been fitted later and before it came to UK..
DVLA ain't to bright on old bikes, they have been known to call on so called experts for help in certain cases of MoBikes that are hard to date or substantiate ..
Guess who Exeter call occasionally :augie:augie:augie:augie

now it's a GENUINE R69S it's value will have increased quite a bit :D

No. I got it from BEMW in Derby, I asked the DVLA bod if it was all legitimate, and he said there nothing 'hookey' as far as he could see.

Wish it was a 69S, but the chassis number (653666) looks like just the plain old 69 ( if you know what I mean)
I was just going to type that it had been in the UK since new - but with the 'new' identity, I know nothing about it's history, although one of the very old hand written service receipts which I got with it does say 'repairs to BMW R69' so I don't know
