The Union.

That's a constructive and well-thought out comment. Care to elaborate?

Allow me to have a wild guess.

Wully works in the oil industry. Mr K doesn't. Wully doesn't agree with Mr K's post.

Of course I could be wrong.

In all this patter about oil & gas, has anyone wondered where the Shetland Islanders would want to be in a UK breakup? Maybe they would want to bring their oil & gas to an independent England. :nenau

Good job the main, English controlled, political parties don't speak for the English majority then. You want independence? Fine by me...

Independant Scotland.

Scottish taxpayers paying for everything, education, health, armed forces, Police, the list is endless.
Total seperation, meaning not one single penny from England & Wales.

Yes, I'd vote for that tomorrow.

Only if we can build that wall back up to keep them out completely!

Although, it might be nice to have gaps wide enough for a GS in it...

And we'd need to ship all those Jocks who've come south for work back home too. Wonder how many as a percentage there are down here now?

hThe Labour party is entirely reliant on Scottish MPs at Westminster to form a future government, and without Scotland they would never be likely to win another election on their own, and quite possibly not with the liberals either. England would be forever a Conservative state.

The full name of the Tories is, or was, The Conservative and Unionist Party, they have ideological reasons for keeping the Union alive. Plus one rather practical one. If Scotland becomes independent from England, there exists the possibility that a future Scottish government could bring a claim against the English government for all the oil and gas taxation taken from extraction from Scottish territorial waters, less of course the money given by England to Scotland under the various grants.

With a history of financial institutions around Edinburgh, it is possible that Scotland will, if fiscally independent, establish itself as a more attractive financial centre and compete with London. A couple of points less on the bank tax rates would go a long way in getting banks to move.

I know Alex Salmond is one of the sharpest politicians in the UK, and he is angling for fiscal independence, but keeping shared foreign and defence within the UK. He might well succeed too.

What would be the scots nationalist perspective if after the break up of the UK the Shetlanders decided to be an independent state and tax haven like the Isle of man, or even align themselves to Norway to whom the Shetlands were a dependecy of for 594 years?
As at this time the Scots would be reinterpreting their relationship with England, there is no reason why the Shetlanders wouldn't reinterpret their relations with Scotland.
If the Shetland Islands territorial waters do not for whatever reason provide Edinburgh with oil revenues then the SNP's economic dreams might well fail.

Although written in 1999, and some things have chnged since, some of you should read 'Nor shall my sword-the reinvention of England' by Simon Heffer, this bloke raises some very interesting points, and argues a reasonable case for England to declare itself independent from the rest of the UK (and the EU)

I realise the independence issue is not only about oil, but oil seems to be the golden egg that is brought up in the main by the nationalists.

i must admit to feeling sorry for the english not having a viable independence movement of their own, i agree , you should have it :thumb2. it confuses me why you persist in voting for a conservative government that strives to keep you tied up in your own class war with yourselves. instead of looking inward to see what your country lacks, you're too busy showing what you have, thats sad :(. i'm sure i've seen someones signature line saying " he who dies with the most toys wins"
I was once asked by a child from england how much my house was worth , presumably he was trying to see where i was in your class system , therefore able to work out his own place. it seems to be instilled in your DNA from the cradle to the grave.stop thinking you're superior to other races( a purely english trait) rise up, change, make a country you can be proud of.
Scotland is doing just that.:flag

I don't think Independance will be good for Scotland.

Do you really think a London Government will give up the oil revenue? and why would they?
If they would, I'd be campaigning for independance for the North East: All that back money for coal, steel, ships, stotty cakes, pigeons and whippets..and we'd live like MPs.

My dodgy humour asside, these collection of Kingdoms work as a Union.

:nenau

around 305 years mate

BTW i've seen Newport  luckily from the comfort of the celtic manor :thumb

The Celtic manor isn't really representative of Newport, you should have been brave and had a look around.

I married a Scot, lived in Alness and worked in the rig yard at Nigg bay for 2 years, every day I was told it was 'our' oil and come independence blah blah. I never met anyone who didn't want to be independent, and yet when it came time to vote who got in....Charles Kennady, a liberal bleeding democrat!!

I enjoyed it though
