A good choice Paul. We used an R100GS and whilst it wasn't faultless by any means, overheating and gear lever return springs mainly, it was easy to repair and you can spares everywhere. We had the rear sub-frame braced, pannier frames for Touratech panniers, wrap round crash bars and other preperations done by Ernie at 'Overland Solution' it doesn't come cheap, but he does a fantastic job. I fitted a 43 Litre tank. We were travelling two up so comfort was high on the list of priorities and it was perfect. In hindsight I wish I lowered the footpegs as my knees ached after a long day in the saddle.
If I were going alone I would look seriously look at an Africa Twin, but still consider the GS a good choice.
