theft of 1200 info

For everyone who doesn't bother their arse to use extra security and has their bike stolen it means another insurance claim.

I for one owned hot hatches in the late 80's and 90's and remember how premiums on certain models doubled and trebled each year and certain models became uninsurable due to thefts.

If the thefts of GS and GSA models continues unabated with owners not taking further precautions then in some areas they will become more and more expensive to insure and the premiums for us poor sods who live in the sticks will rise because we also own a model that is considered by insuance companies to be a high risk.

Yeah , but aren't we missing a major point here. Why is Wapping posting pictures of an air cooled GS in the Watercooled section

Is he some kind of cnut ?

It was the first bike I saw, it as near as made no odds linked with the topic and arguably the entire section better than, "What gloves look awesome?"

I just took issue with calling the poor sod who's had his bike nicked a cnut

The cnut hadn't had his bike nicked; he'd just abandoned it to fate with just the cheese disc lock. Had he of had it nicked by a cnut, he'd have become a victim.

My first BMW came with a lock included plus a nice storage area for it and that was in the days you could leave your front door unlocked, car with the keys in, etc etc cue Hovis music..... for those under 55, pre Thatcher.

Now I have nowhere to store my lock(s) apart from rattling around inside a pannier, knocking lumps out of everything in there and destroying the pannier itself, doh.

Had he of had it nicked.......

Had he of ?

Of ?

Really Wappers,standards have slipped.
To say nothing of your numerous "disk" locks..... :augie

Anyway,I reckon you should buy a job lot of locks and attach them to any unsecured awesome steeds that you encounter on your wanderings.
Post the keys to the registration number c/o DVLA. :D

I have a Wunderlich bag under my rear rack and above the rear light. Stores my disc lock, a multi tool and a helmet cable lock perfectly.

Water Money ... agreed.

Unicycler , thank you.

wapping seems to think its wrongful to leave your bike without a chain.
His words were "And the cnuts moan that other cnuts pinch them."

Nothing to do with the criminals heh?

Maybe he is the sad misguided guy who looks at a rape case and says "she was wearing a short skirt, provocative and certainly asking for it ?"

Wapping works in insurance so by default that makes him a ..... when it comes to anything that could end up been a claim

.......= specialist ****

As ive had some time to work on the rear end of the bike for a few week,s

I've been giving this some thought. there are several areas, that present ideal security options.

One would require some some input from the industry, as it would render the vehicle unsafe if the security feature was forcibly

removed. (although is that a bad thing?)

The others are possibilitys, I need to see whats out there security wise to see if it would work

I was taking the piss ;)

By the way Aldi were selling some good gloves for about £20 this year.........

attempts theft Chelsea - stuffed steering lock
I parked in a bike park in Chelsea outside 2 restaurants, many shops, painters about etc and went to get a coffee 40m around the corner.

I saw 4 guys on 2 scooters head around the corner towards the bike park and in 20 seconds my alarm was sounding. I ran around the corner to see 4 thugs hooded with balaclavas and helmets around my bike, I yelled and sprinted at them, they ran to their scooters they left in the middle of the road and just took off before I could get a shot at one of them, my hamstring pulled about 3m from them (I'm 61) and I was left hobbling after them as they took off. They tried to snap the steering lock but it held and is damaged. I can still engage it but it won't undo so I found after a lot of fiddling I could pop the metal prong back into place with my finger.
Does anyone know how easy to is to find an replace the key unit??
Is there a way to replace the damaged part within the original steering lock unit?

All advice gratefully accepted

Thanks

Errr, what kind of world do you live in ?

Yes ... It is the fucker who steals the bike ...HIS FAULT!

Not a hard concept to grasp heh?

I dislike the blame, that gets apportioned to those who fail to carry a heavy chain ( that a disc cutter goes through like a knive through butter)
If every rider used a chain there would still be thefts.
Changes in policing and criminal justice are needed, not more locks.

Here's a few really simple concepts:

1. Bikes are irresistibly attractive to thieves - professional and opportunist alike.

2. Bikes are easy to lift/carry/push.

3. The System DOES NOT protect your bike, and WILL NOT find and replace your bike.

4. If YOU don't secure YOUR bike to something immovable, YOU bear at least some responsibility for its theft.

Wapping is right - of course it's fucking "wrongful" to not lock your bike. Not only wrongful - stupid and naive.

Wapping, chains and add-on security are not the answer. If we all used chains, bike thefts would still occur.
Even an old imbecile like you, can see that!

The answer lies across many areas; Policing, improvements to the criminal justice system, immigration, technology, education and good old fashioned punishment!
The Policemen on this forum will explain it better than me. (well they would if it didn't risk their careers by stating their thoughts!)

Basically ...they try their best, but resources and new politically correct rules hamper them.

Chains are the answer. Or more accurately, they are part of the answer - multiple devices and multiple clever measures are the answer. This is how it is until concept 3 above changes, and The System DOES protect your bike, and/or DOES find and replace your stolen bike.

Even I spotted the scooter that appears just in shot at the clip end.

Yes, it would be nice if manufacturers marked with smart water or similar to make it easier to prove stolen and get a conviction.

Unfortunately Da Met got rid of Dr Ken German one of the foremost experts in vehicle theft and a really nice bloke too.

Vehicle theft, especially of ptw was not seen as a priority.

Up here, there isn't even anyone who can check on ringers as Police Scotland decided vehicle theft isn't an issue.

Sadly North Edinburgh resembles the wild west, and recently a young boy was knocked down on a pedestrian crossing by youth's on two stole bike's.
Now something is being done!

The Edinburgh Evening News, still calls these feral little bastards, biker's; call them what they are thieves.

If, they really want your bike, they'll take it.

All you can do is make it more likely they'll go for the easier (no security) choice.

Yep. And clearly there are plenty of muppets out there who leave the security of their bikes to chance and the good will of their fellow man...

As with everything you own, you and only you are responsible for it's safe keeping.

That's it. In a perfect nutshell. Fucking lock it or lose it.
