Hi everyone,

I had a few hours spare last night and fitted some replacement headers to my 08 GSA as I wanted to lose the cat to free some more HP and give a better exhaust note.

I ended up buying Remus headers from Calsport as the Keihan (my original choice) were out of stock with a 6 week wait. There are a few others to choose from and apart from build quality I think the net effect would be the same.

I'm not mechanically minded at all and with some simple instructions (thanks Sgt Bilko) I had the job done in 90 minutes including a run to halfords to buy some torx bits and a large adj. spanner for the lamda sensors. Trickiest bit was re-fitting the lamda sensors. Left one was ok, pre-twisted the wire by 4 turns and then screwed it in to un-twist it.

The right had one was a no go and had to be unclipped as the wire was too short. Once done up it clipped on ok (I think a tiny bit of plastic that locks the clip may have snapped but it's v.tight and no going anywhere.

BTW, I can't remember where I read this but everyone doing this job should start up the bike with no end can on if you want to put a massive smile on your face. :D Sounds fantastic. Shame we can't legally run it like that.

Had a real fight trying to get the centre supporting bolt done up on the rubber hanger as I have big hands and it's a tiny space. OEM end can back on (that's bloody heavy too!) all alligned and tightened, job done :thumb

Start it up....

OMG! Sounds ace. Nice deep burble, much deeper than standard. Fairly tame on idle or gentle revs but push it and it gets angry! Sounds like a real bike at last. No obvious leaks just lots of smoke from WD40 burning off.

Took it for a 20 mile run and while I'm no expert I could immediately tell it was revving much free'er and seemingly quicker/smoother too. When accellerating hard the exhaust note is perfect for me, deep/rumbling but not offensively loud. With earplugs I can hear the exhaust note now rather than just engine/wind noise.

Front wheel tried lifting a few times only to be kept in check by the ASC and a quick flickering of the warning light on the dash told me so.

Does it go faster or have any more HP? I don't know, but it feels faster and smoother.

Overall very VERY pleased.:clap

Remus or oem headers cutting cat?

I have an akro can and i was thinking of purchasing the remus headers, but from reading threads here about cutting the cat on the oem headers which are actually very good headers and saving a lot of money(here in greece the remus headers cost 450euro and a the mechanic that will take of the cat from the oem headers will do the job for 150euro)i think is a good solution..my opinion is if buying aftermarket headers spend some extra money and take the akra ones from NN for 450pounds!Just my opinion..!

How much do you want to spend?

Prices vary from £350 > £180, options are Remus (v.pricey down due to exchange rates), Keihan, ebay (can't remember brand), motad and a few others.

As I said earlier, you pay your money, make your choice, I think they'll all do the job and it's a matter of fit and finish.

Can't help with regards to which fit with your engine bars I'm afraid. I have OEM ones

are the Akra ones titanium? Still, £450 is too much for pipes, especially as here in the UK there are plenty of used ones from Remus that go for under 200...

But bike kit and stuff in Athens is indeed v expensive! Was on Michalakopoulou av the other day (Ath on business) and could not believe what people are asking for jackets, helmets etc...

One needs Eur 25k for fully equippd GS12 with luggage and clothing to go!

Indeed moto stuff are very expencive here in greece because there is not much variety but u can always find good prices if u search a lot..!I payed for my GSA '09 17.200 euro with discount fully equipped no panniers,350euro for a Dainese Jacket and 600euro for the akra carbon can when bmw akra cost 900!!Exactly the same exhaust just different logo!Oh and akra pipes are titanium, check nippy site on akrapovic for bmw,he is the only one that sells the akra pipes separately!

Steve thats exactly what I'd like to do to my 08 GS, but I recall some threads that said th 08 would end up weak on fuel and the lambdas did not properly compensate for the cat removal.

Did you look into whether you'd need a Power Commander or similar?

Motad are a good fit, and cheaper than most.
