I've seen a number of posts about the third year extension and the £650 cost BMW levies.

Well now my extension letter dropped through the post as my 1200GS turns two years old in April. BMW seem only to want from me a measly £362 or £334 if I choose to go with a £100 excess.

Considering this comes with comprehensive UK and European breakdown cover (which is optional). I reckon that is an excellent deal especially for someone like me who's covering 18k miles per year. The only mileage limitation seems to be that bikes must have done less that 80,000 before the start of the warranty period.

Am I missing something or have BMW almost halved the cost of the warranty extension. Anyone else been renewed at this level??

Interesting. As I bought mine at 2 years old (so have used years warranty) I wonder if I'll get offered the same deal. 300 odd quid still isn't a bargain mind.

You can have the European recovery cover on its own for just over £100.00 ... a bargain!

If the bike has been faultless in the two years then I'd call their bluff and do without the third year warranty.

If it's a 1200 then I'd gladly pay it

If anything does go wrong expensive wise, a good dealer will fight your claim and get BMW to 'meet you' ...

Made a call to BMW insurance/warranty dep. a few weeks ago, which in fact is Mondial , they run it on behalf of BMW , hence is cheaper .I wanted to see the small print , still wainting...

I had a word with the my local dealer about this about a month ago. Apparently BMW reviewed the prices of their extended warranty on all their products (cars included) as it was not flying off the shelves. Hence a nice 50% reduction.

The guys at North Oxford confirmed the price drop as well :clap

Not a bad deal

IMHO, I think this is a good deal and much better than an insurance backed warranty you can buy elsewhere. Having been in a similar business (trucks sales) for many years, I can tell you that anything manufacturer backed holds a lot of weight and the manufacturere will look favourably on you as a customer for any goodwill etc. "Off the shelf" insurance warranties have one goal which is profit for the insurer and will wriggle like hell on any claim! You may save £50 but you`ll lose in the end.

The problem is, we all think nothing will happen to our trusty steeds but they are only bits of metal put together which do fail on occasion. I`ll certainley be taking it in September when mine is 2 years old. I cover around 20k miles per annum so it`s a no brainer for me at 15 pence per mile.

As for £300 not being a bargain, given the complexity of the 1200 systems and it not being bombproof (what is?), it`s at least a pretty good deal and comprable with other manufacturers.

It seems, if the post from Kalahari is right, that it's an insurance backed scheme, underwritten by Mondial, which is think is Axa.

You are right in as much as an insurance backed guarantee has to be specific about what it covers, or more importantly, what it doesn't cover. It is, after all, simply a contract of indemnity. A guarantee from a manufacturer can be more flexible, as they (and they alone) can make an allowance for goodwill gestures.

The 'prilla 2nd year warranty on new bikes was (it may still be) an insurance backed guarantee, rather than coming from the Italian factory. That was very awkward to deal with.

It's quite possible that, behind the scenes, BuMW insure their whole warranty and guarantee business anyway, either with their own in-house insurance company or out into the wider insurance market.

I'm sure its been asked and may have been answered before but how do the BMW standard 2yr warrantee and the extended scheme differ in their cover?

I know that corrosion 's not covered by the optional extension, what else?

Shep

I think you are right here Wapping because we used to do that at MAN trucks.

The point is with all these schemes is, the paperwork has BM* written on it so the manufacturer has much more of an interest in keeping the customer happy and will intervene where necessary to keep the customer happy.

For me, it tips the balance in their favour despite a higher cost:thumb

And the same with the insurance as well, although it seems to be competitive :)

Mine just dropped through the letter box today. Like you, my R1200GS is two years old next month, and, I too, was very surprised as I was expecting an invitation to extend the warranty for double what I've been quoted.

I've read the small print and it seems a comprehensive enough warranty and, to my mind, a whole lot better than an insurance backed warranty you can buy elsewhere, as Sgt Bilco says.

So I've bitten the bullet and opted to renew it.

... Price reduction, good thing :thumb

... The BuMW manufacturers warranty is undoubtably good, I have absolutely no desire to need to use it :blast

Its nice to see so many GS1200 owners having so much faith in the reliability of their machines.
Im sorry but we are all a load of mugs...including me.

Seems a decent price. I think I'd have to think about that when the time comes.

...Mine has....and I will....Do without it, that is.....

Some serious 'Worry Beads' on this site........:)

Rather than be happy with a 50% reduction, you should be pushing for it to be free...it is overseas is it not?

Dont compare the bike company with the car company.
They are run totally different.
BMW know they cant bullshit and get away with offering a crap service and products to car owners.
The crafty Germans.................:oonyack
