This is brill stuff

Is there something similar available for us folk with the chrome pipes?

Yep, Autosol, rags, and loads of elbow grease!:D I used this stuff on my chrome pipes by mistake, and thought it had wrecked them, but they have come up as good as new, after spending a few hours in the garage!:blast:beerjug:

Stainless exhausts will always go brown, but they can be kept at a lovely shiny golden brown buy using lots of elbow grease along with solvol-autosol or similar metal polish. Once you have got then shiny then a periodic polishing keeps them looking great for years and years.

I always thought autosol was bad for chrome until I read this, looked up autosol and it's right there in black and white on the box; "chrome, aluminium and metal polish" :blast

Is it best to use sparingly and do a small area at a time?

Nah.:D Cake it on, and use an old T shirt, as long a length as possible, then grab each end, loop it round the exhaust and pull away!:thumb

Is annually an adequate period?:augie

A metre or so of soft rope is perfect for this - you can wrap it round the pipes a couple of times and work from a comfortable distance

Guys, I tried some Hein Gericke `intensive exhaust cleaner` today and it was awesome.

My 2010 pipes were horrible and only after 7000 miles they looked `brown` and `muddy` - the worst I`ve ever seen pipes to be honest.

So anyway, I tried some of this stuff, you spray it on then jet wash it off - amazing - the pipes look better than when I bought the bike.

Hey Mark - so two months on what colour are your headers - shiny like new or are they back to brown ? Keen to give this stuff a go but not if you have to reapply it every 5 minutes :D

mate - they have slightly, very slightly, discoloured but seem better for the treatment. I`ll try to have the brains (uber doubtful) to report back after this years rides (Scotland and Ireland)

Sounds promising - will give it a try as they spoil the look of the bike the way they are at the moment - should have gone for the chrome headers :blast never mind:comfort

Been following this thread. I have a GS 1150 how do I tell if it has chrome headers or stainless steel. Whatever they are they don't look too bad at the moment but as I am OCD about polishing they could always be better.

If they go blue - chrome,
brown - stainless,
Rusty - you've been sold a pup:D

Is there a more scientific way of working it out. Mine were brown. I cleaned them up and now they go slighly blue. Confused:confused:

Step, aren't the chrome ones (at least on newer 1200s) chrome on stainless? So magnet won't tell you anything.

Chrome is magnetic so a magnet will stick to a chromed stainless pipe.
