I've tried setting these before, but winding the screws in or out did not make much difference.

Yesterday after deciding to see what the 1150 sounded like without a silencer................ my first thought was why bother with one, if the cat. mutes it so that it is only marginally louder without the silencer. A bit louder on the overun.

However, as I was fiddling, I removed the big brass screws, ugh! :blast There was a coating of what I can only describe as a thin black grease like substance. Wiped this off, quick blast of brake cleaner down the threads where the screws go. Now the screws actually do alter the idle speed.:) This in effect must have been blocking the air passage?

So what I'm saying is remove the screws & clean them & the air passage before adjustig th screws.

Down in deepest darkest Hythe meself.
Got to redo my balancing soon so I may have a nosey at the "Gunk" and see whats what.

I got the idle speed down to where it should be, but the balance is about 6" out on the manometer. But it's running fine:confused: Pehaps the valve clearances are adrift. I might blast some cleaner into the nipples:)

So Eliminator, did you decide to leave it off?

Did the engine feel much different to you on the road?

Yes, I left it off. It's definitely marginally louder, only really noticeable on the overun though. Not at all offensive, can't say I've noticed any difference in power. Have to see if the fuel consumption alters. Ridden it on the commute along the Motorway, I'll have a look at the plugs at the weekend.

I've just done a search & read that yours is off as well. I assume that it is still running OK? I was really surprised at how little difference removing the can made to the noise, and as for how much it weighs:eek: Ill have to get a stub pipe from somewhere as I don't fancy it filling with water.

Look here:- http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95714&highlight=Grubster

that is where I got mine. A genuine BMW clamp for the front pipe to cat connection fits a treat.
