If you can afford it stop thinking and go buy it
For what it's worth I have owned a ZZR1100 (reliable, rubbish finish), Triumph 1200 Trophy (reliable, fair finish, didn't like the handling), Fireblade (Reliable, good finish, great handling), F6C Valkyrie ( reliable, really rubbish finish with wheels and swinging arm replaced by Honda when a few months old) and a Varadero ( reliable, good finish, good handling but drank petrol)
The point I am trying to make, nothing is perfect.
So now the 1200GS. My first, a 54reg, suffered a bit. It had new engine management plus all the normal problems documented on this site. I was a little fed up but purchased a second to put the problems behind me. This one has been a lot better with only minor faults, wouldn't start due faulty sensor and the fuel pump controller was replaced.
Everything has always been fixed by the dealer without question, often meaning they had to pick the bike up, a 100 mile round trip.
Anyway, as I love everything else about the bike I have just got another a few weeks ago. Grey, spoked wheels, heated grips, hugger, engine bars but decided to ditch the ABS. I think the normal brakes feel better and no possibility of problems in the future. Have also purchased Sargent seats and Jesse luggage.
BMW have let the customer develop this machine which I don't think is a good thing but it is getting more reliable. Remember you always tend to hear the negative things. Hope I am right as this one will hopefully be kept for a long time.
Stop thinking, buy it and go have some fun.
