To H.I.D. headbeam or not to H.I.D. headbeam

I have read in another (car) site that "there are issues with 55w HID lamps elting surrounding plastic"?

Any input re that issue?

As HID lamps run cooler than standard ones and are only the same power rating I'd be very surprised.

Where did you get these?

Note these are the thick ballasts, not the thin digital ones. This company do the thin ballast hids, but only in 35w at the moment. You can specify power rating and colour temperature and they supply a complete plug and play kit. Took me an hour or so to fit yesterday which included removing the headlights and drilling the larger holes in the back of the mounting.

Make sure you insulate the connections inside the lamp housing or you are at risk of a short. There's a really good thread on advrider which shows the install on the 1150.

there's also other threads for the 1200 too.

I have HIDs on both dipped and main (and fogs if you must know) and the main beam flashes prefectly well. Did a run up to Grantown on Spey the other evening and cars were flashing me because they thought I wasn't dipping. I flashed them back to show I was.

The reason I fitted HID to both the Dip & Main beam, is that should the dipped beam burner or ballast fail I can easily swap the ballast or burner from the main beam over, at the roadside & still have a dipped beam to get home / garage.

'The problem with HIDing the dip and not th main is that when you switch to main, it makes almost no difference at all.'

DUH!!!

I'm sure, somewhere in there, is the reason why this thread was started
Sorry my psychic powers are obviously not as good as yours:bow

you,v got the beam set wrong then:thumb2
just cos you have HID doesnt mean cars need to get blinded

Fitted.

Result - dip is very good & bright and so far no one's flashed back at me:mmmm Main beam flashes OK but doesn't reach full strength for about 3 to 5secs, the effect is that it "grows" to fill in the area above the dip. Once it gets there it's really good. Well pleased.

BTW I fitted a 35w dip and a 55w main, both have slim ballasts.

Hi Scott Dog

yup they are amazing . Mine are both 55w slimline (digital). Had bother with the second (headbeam) one and had to get another ballast sent up all fine now.
Ordered and received a pair of projector driving lamps from same chap.
Need to order the H.I.D. system to fit them now - amazing!!!

BTW where have you mounted the ballasts SD ?

I'll show you mine .................

ignore the bikes mucky face. Not got a chance to clean it since out in last Fridays snaw. :(

So, went out to get a photo, to find that I'd fitted the ballasts in the open part of the beak (arrowed here)

- ugly!!

So repositioned them hidden by the beak - much better!!

Not so neat is my tie wraps...

This was on my 1200, it's much neater now on the Adventure- honest.

How come it's so clean - don't you go anywhere?!?

I'm never very sure about mounting electrics right out in the weather, so I'm always looking to hide them away somewhere!
