I remember reading that puting in too much oil is a bad thing! (I wouldn't have guessed) What I would love to know is: what specifically happens to the boxer engine when too much is put in.

It gets ejected - usually through the oil breather into the airbox

But it depends what you call "too much oil"

It all starts to go downhill, when the cranks are hitting the solid oil at a few thousand revs...............

When the pistons are hitting it.............................

Order a new engine :blast

Al :D

As Steptoe says, depends how much.

There was a customer at my local BMW dealer that did not realise that fresh oil did not show through the window as old oil. He did not notice and kept topping up !! He managed to put 7 litres in and broke his starter motor when trying to start it !!
If it was you, then i dont know who you are, i just overheard the telephone conversation and then joined in the discussion that followed after the phone call was ended with the customer...

Other things broke, but i did not understand what they were talking about!!

Approx cost of error was around 700 quid.

I always put about 4.1. to 4.2 litres in when 3.8 is stated. (1200 GS) There's loads of chat on this site re: oil levels. I stick to a constant which is:
On level ground, keep the bike ticking over when hot. The oil tends to splosh around showing the oil indicator window to be roughly half full. Been good enough for me, for the last 54k miles.

I had a customer do something similar - Couldn't see the oil level in the window ( because it was full), so kept pouring oil in.

He only had to drive 2 miles to get here but when he arrived the bike was barely running and smoking like a chimney.

The oil breather box under the air filter was full of oil, i got more than 2 ltrs out of it.
Drained the engine off to the correct level and away he went, the engine smoked for another 20 miles and then back to normal.

I've put in about 150 - 200ml above the top a few times, thats all. Problem with my bike, which is a late 1150, is it uses a lot. Bought it with 5k on and now done 28k but still uses quite a bit-about 400ml every 5-600 miles.

Can't imagine that would be any sort of problem? At worst, it might spit it out of the breather. I had an old Guzzi that liked the oil level to be half way up the dipstick: if I filled it, the level would drop quickly, then stay where it was happy with. I found it best to cooperate with the old girl, particularly since the Italians had placed the breather outlet just ahead of the rear tyre...
