As Steptoe says, depends how much.
There was a customer at my local BMW dealer that did not realise that fresh oil did not show through the window as old oil. He did not notice and kept topping up !! He managed to put 7 litres in and broke his starter motor when trying to start it !!
If it was you, then i dont know who you are, i just overheard the telephone conversation and then joined in the discussion that followed after the phone call was ended with the customer...
Other things broke, but i did not understand what they were talking about!!
Approx cost of error was around 700 quid.

I always put about 4.1. to 4.2 litres in when 3.8 is stated. (1200 GS) There's loads of chat on this site re: oil levels. I stick to a constant which is:
On level ground, keep the bike ticking over when hot. The oil tends to splosh around showing the oil indicator window to be roughly half full. Been good enough for me, for the last 54k miles.
