I've been looking to fit the Touratech/Nippy Normans toolbox but have recently come across a "similar" box generally available at half the price ... has anyone any experience as to whether the cheaper option is just a cheap Chinese knock-off that will fall apart after a year or whether it's a viable alternative? I prefer to "buy right buy once" ;)

Touratech linky

Chinese knock off linky

give it a go?

I went through the same dilemma - i ended up with a 2nd hand touratech one - but i bet those knock-offs are very very similar!

(note - the touratech one isn't "amazing quality" to start with!)

oh also - i am fairly sure they are cheaper still on eBay!

I've got a Chinese knock off tool box, I'd definitely go for one. Can also recommend the Chinky hand guard extenders and front fender extender.

I would agree, mine was a 2nd hand one and leaked like a sieve, I had to silicon all the parts inside and outside where the fittings attach it to the rails and make a rubber seal for the opening from an old inner tube.....dry now though:thumby:

I have a Touratech one, but I’d have happily bought the copy version as you need to bag up the contents in the full priced one.

Some gear from the pacific rim countries is good! Some fail quickly with no service and support. Sadly the boxes I make (and TT etc etc) are much more expensive but we just can`t compete on item cost but thankfully we outstrip them on service - I take phone calls 24/7 to my mobile to discuss and support my gear, you won`t get that from China.

I recently rode to the Midlands to help a customer who couldn`t fit his pillion box (fault with the lock on the bike), all it cost him was a coffee and a bacon roll :)

But with that said if it works then that`s brill - I`d do exactly the same! £45....... jeez.

It's a moulded plastic box though Mark, even if made in the UK it could be produced at a lot less cost than a fully fabricated box ... it certainly can't be as durable as one of yours though!

Fitted mine today

fitted today, this is the £59.95 one from Amazon. No instructions, but it’s easy to work out. Swopped out some of the nuts and bolts for SS. Other than that all good.

True, you can stand on mine, drive over it, kick it around the car park, douse it in unleaded and set fire to it etc etc (which I`ve done). TBH it`s possibly over engineered but IMHO buy cheap buy twice. Nonetheless I`m really pleased for the lads who have bought from China and are happy!

What I would say about buying cheap from China though is that only spend what I'd be prepared to take a chance on losing.
If I wasn't happy to maybe end up binning the item and putting it down to experience then I wouldn't bother.
