Top 5 mods for a 1200 GS

I have recently bought a 2006 1200GS and was wondering where the smart money is spent on making modifications. I am guessing the screen might be a good starting point as I was used to a GSA screen on my previous 1150GS.
So if people would offer their opinions I will try to read between the lines.

Cue the thousand replies from the miserable buggers on here, saying spend the money on petrol, and you don't need to spend any money on the bike.

Here's my recommendations.

Seat
Screen
Crud catcher
Engine bars
HID headlight upgrade

Not necessarily in that order.

sidestand foot enlarger.

maybe an HID headlight conversion.

all the rest is pointless tat.

Decat headers, either buy new or cut and gut your OE ones.

Presuming you have the standard stuff like Luggage, Fog lights and Crash bars:

Crud catcher
Mudsling
Sargent seat
Wilber's/Ohlins
Remap
Bigfoot for side stand

Headers (add a can if you like)
Power Commander (have a remap if you really think it's better)
Hugger (add a mudsling too if you can) - but the two work best together.
Screen - fit a screen that works best for you - it will be the best upgrade on longer runs.



On longer runs - I'd go for the screen. On shorter blasts I'd go for exhaust and PCV with some dyno time - the exhaust etc., is going to be expensive for the benefits, as the bike is good standard - but the standard screen would make the bike unrideable for me on longer rides. I've yet to find the right screen for me, as I need something larger than the Adventure screen I have on mine at the minute.

A lot of the things suggested can be found on the for sale section if you're prepared to wait long enough.

Personally, I'd get a crud catcher, then wait and see what you need.

If you don't ride at night much, then the HIDS aren't very important. If you like to lean over a long way, a cameltoe will get in the way.

Depends on what you are going to do. For me:

Seat
screen extender
Decent aluminium boxes
Cameltoe
Engine bars

Then you're good to go anywhwere.

Buy a GSA with luggage then add

bar risers
fatfoot
and if it needs it after market suspension, Wilbers because it is cheaper than Ohlins.

a decatted exhaust is worth having if the budget will stretch,it will give a proper mid range boost

do yerself a favour and seek out a quick action throttle kit,by far the best single mod ive done to all my 1200 gsa,plus crud catcher,mudsling,center stand guard and a comfy seat cause the standard one is crap

So, to add to the general mayhem for my GS it was.

- Wilbers - you shocks if OEM are probably well past their best. Wilbers are about half the price of Ohlins and whilst not quite as good, are Much better than the BMW fair. You can pick up a second hand set and get reconditioned for under £600 if you are lucky. Talk to the boys at Revs Racing.

- Hilltop remap - you will think you have a new bike. Having had this done would always go for this over a fancy new end can that achieves very little - about £360

- HID to dipped only - even if you do not ride at night I see this as a safety feature as it I is MUCH easier to spot. Don't bother with high, the transition is too slow and the beam patten crap.

- Crud catcher

- Mud sling

- MRA Xtreme screen extender for no buffeting...at all.

If the first two are too expensive then would go with

- quick action throttle

- Accelerator module - really smooths out on/off throttle and worth it for the price.

Good luck but as others have said....it really is down to the type of riding you do.
