Totally flat...

nadeem, when did they update your bike software for the last time ?

With all these stories of batteries going flat after just one week. I can't help wondering if they were fully charged in the first place. Even with a bike that's used regularly, there's no reliable way of checking the battery state. Although I leave my bike on trickle charge, I have left it unconnected & unridden for a few weeks; the bike started first time.

Just a thought.

The new R1200GS Adv has an onboard charger, BMW supply a country specific mains lead that plugs into an outlet on the bike.

It seems they're addressing the problem on the latest models

You are kidding........ aren't you ?

If true that seems like a very arse about face way of adressing the problem.

....I should hope so. With the extra weight / volume of a charger you could fit a decent sized battery in.

HOWEVER, to put all this in to context, all the ricerockets are suffering similar problems if you scan through some other bike forums. I don't think its a sole BMW problem. Save weight save money....thats what sells.

Well - My 1200GS battery has never gone flat (X Fingers) despite it having been left several times recently for up to three weeks at a time when I was in hospital, or not allowed to drive/ride. It might have been slightly sluggish but it started every time. The last time I rode the bike was last Saturday. I now cannot ride until next Wednesday. It is not on a charger. I will tell you how I get on.

That's not going to be terribly safe to use in the rain is it? - farting about with a kettle lead if it starts to piss down while it's on charge. :nono

Now you all know Kev's need to take the piss, yet you are taking it seriously... :eek

Went out on my 12 today after 4 weeks laid up. Started first turn over, no probs. Don't have an Optimate or similar.

Mind you mine is blue. I understand the yellow ones are pretty crap :D
Mind you mine is blue.
.....ah well, only has to turn over the low power engine :dabone

Rumour has it that on the 1200 adv they have gone really rufty tufty and fitted a kickstart. Latest German invention.

Had my first flat battery incident over the weekend. I left the headlight on (without engine running) for 15-20 minutes while I erected my tent. When I turned the bike off the headlight was still looking healthy, but in the morning battery was too flat to turn the starter,

Got a jump start from a car and everything has been fine since.

Makes me wonder if the battery capacity isn't a bit marginal, as has been suggested.

Assuming the headlamp takes 5 amps, I shouldn't have taken more than about 2 AH from the allegedly 14AH battery. It was a cold night though.

What you need is a heated garage. These GS's arent meant to stay out overnight - not built for that sort of abuse! :D

My 54 used suffered quite badly from this last winter but now starts if left. Always sounds lethargic.

The RSV can be left for 5 weeks and will start up first time

So much for German v Italian (2)

The last six weeks have seen me on the bike twice, with three weeks between rides, bike has started first time. When I first picked it up (September 2004) I experienced a flat battery, but that was because I had inadvertantly left the parking light on.

well according to prestige today, the recall letter is for the battery software update...so booked in for the 25th to get it done.
