Traction control failure after stall.

Odd one today Riding the GSA to work…. Stopped at lights and dropped it into Neutral….or so I thought,

Of course I’d popped it into first so on releasing the clutch got the obvious stall. Not an issue, done it before, probably do it again at some point. However, as I quickly just went to restart it there was nothing and then it showed up an error message-

Traction control failure, onward journey impossible.

As you can imagine, being in live traffic I was somewhat flustered at both my stupidity and the situation, so dropped the clutch and booled myself to the kerb edge rather confused.

Turned off and on…attempted restart and nothing…same error. I then realised in my fluster I was still in gear so managed to find neutral and tried again and hey presto…we were started again.

Now I know it’s my fault, and then perhaps trying to restart in gear isn’t ideal but wondered if this has happened to others?
I could just restart in gear on my old GS, and sure I have done so before with my current one so interested if there may be an issue developing.

It’s a new bike, 6 months old, 1000 miles.
 
When my battery was on its way out (2019 GSA) whenever I started the bike I would get a list of weird and wonderful errors thrown up (brake light not functioning being the most common)

Despite not a single one of them being true and never seen again once I replaced the battery

These bikes are weird and wonderful things to own
 
Same a Bigcats - my most common one was/is rear strut failure. Onward journey possible.

Mine occur if i go to start it on a cold day and it doesn't catch first time
 
Mine decided not to start this morning. After all, a whole Easter weekend is a totally unreasonable time to leave an adventure bike without connecting it to the mains.

And it had a new battery about seven weeks back

This happens to me if I stall it. Can't start it in gear, even with clutch in. Traction control error puts itself right after a restart. 2023 GSA.

Have you got a tracker fitted?
 
Probably just a low voltage trigger that escalated into other stuff.

Personally I'd just turn it off and on then get going again. Keep an eye on the battery voltage just in case it's a warning sign.

is the key kept within range of where the Bike could detect it? If its gone dead that quick i'd suspect the Bike is either looking for the key/it's close enough for it to be 'active', or you've a parasitic drain somewhere if you have any accessories installed.

& if you do have a tracker it'll drain the battery in no time, but you probably already know that. It needs physically removing or disconnecting to be sure.

the bin is a good place to store one.. :)

I did ages ago see someone mention how to remove it (the factory fitted one) but cannot find the post (it was a comment on someone elses post) as I have one under the seat and can see it connected via a fuse

Surely if I remove that fuse and let the internal battery die that it done with??
 
My 2021 has not really liked starting in gear since day 1. I try to avoid it, but like you it’s easy to forget just after an unexpected stall. Sometimes it will start just fine, but often it turns over half a turn then gives up and throws some kind of weird warning just like yours did. Back into neutral it always restarts and most of the time the errors clear. However one time it threw a warning about adaptive headlight failure. This one would not go away and had to be cleared by the dealer.

Got a tracker on my GSA. I can leave my battery unconnected for a couple of weeks, no problem.

You're lucky and have a good battery. I understand that the battery draining is far worse when there is no subscription & the kit is still hardwired in as it's always looking for a signal or something..

Possibly, I think it also depends on what and how old the tracker is. 1st, 2nd gen etc.

Isn't that what your right boot is for?
52 years of riding bikes and never had one of those! :rob (and still don't!)
The less the gadgets, the less the chances of things going 'south' on you- but what do I know!

Not all trackers are equal.

My Biketrak tracker barely touches the battery on my Bike........it'll sit there for a good few weeks before it drops below 12.5v
 
Possibly, I think it also depends on what and how old the tracker is. 1st, 2nd gen etc.
My 2020 GS had some Datatool tracker thing fitted from new. Totally pointless from an insurance point of view & drained the battery so got rid. Quite possibly there are better units and companies out there as hard to imagine there could be worse.
