On the plus side, on that daily rate you’re unlikely to be troubled by income tax!

Over a 10 year period I went self-employed doing CBT/Direct access, then ran my own Advanced course for a year, followed by HondaMAC and IAM/RoSPA/BMF testing… the money was rubbish. but I had a good accountant.

Overall a lot of fun and riding the bike is a very nice way to spend the day.

when conducting a cbt for new riders eg 16 year olds with zero experience the dvsa stipulates a day, ( ambiguous to say the least) 7 hrs or 8 hrs or just pick a number.
the job is very under paid for what you have to put up with, the only person who really makes any money is the school owner,

Even with all the benefits of being self-employed £85 a day is a terrible wage. It must be minimum wage or less!!

You should see the list of expenses.......and the 'plant' allowance for the bike.

Simon i wasnt suggesting you should not do it as a job, i have just listed some of the ups and downs of the job should you wish to proceed with it, i have been doing it now for a few years and know the good and bad of the job, but of late i only do 2 days a week and very occasionaly 3.

I had the same experience between Dec 23 and this August. Our age doesn't help, I am told. I want work that suits me and them so signed up to Reed and Indeed and just trawled through the short-term contracts and part time work. I eventually found a job driving for a social enterprise company that provides out of hours doctors for the NHS. Suits me great. Keep going because there are loads of companies out there that value the old-fashioned skills of punctuality, literacy, social skills and reliability. One of my sons is a science graduate and can only get part-time work at M&S. It's really tough out there, especially now that the employers side of NI has been increased.

That is why my self employed status should be of interest to them, they don't have any increased cost if they take me on.

I've had a good chat with Simon and he is going into it with his eyes wide open. Nobody does this expecting to make lots of money and at times it is damn hard work in shitty weather. However, it is rewarding and better than working indoors and if, like me, you are retired it provides a welcome opportunity to continue to keep the mind and body active whilst helping people achieve what is sometimes a lifelong ambition. Like you Lee I only do 3-4 days a week and I have dropped it to 2-3 now and come Christmas I will go into Winter hibernation and emerge when the clocks change at the end of March.

I wish Simon all the best in his training and he knows he can call me anytime if he needs assistance.

I am just looking for ANY work. My scissor sharpening gets us about £80/month, but it is very difficult to live off that in the winter. Collecting firewood this weather is not very fruitful, because it is all soaked and so doesn't burn well. We are cooking and heating the kettle on the woodburner at the moment, just to save money.

I have a clean licence and advanced on the bike with a ROSPA silver - but getting past the automated system without a whole list of qualifications and the ability to know how to work the job system brings you up against a brick wall.

I have filled in the online ones, I don't think my 35 year employment missing history helps - self employed doesn't have a trail to follow. I get inundated with fillow up emails, the same job 8 or 9 times.... all saying you haven't filled in the form correctly but someone will be in touch. Just generic regurgitated crap I think - or data mining scams. Ineed, Total Jobs, I am convinced they just sell your details because the spam has gone up massively, like hundreds a day now, when I used to get maybe 3 a week. It is definitely a digital system thing that I can't work. If only there was a way of actually interacting with a human being in real life, not down the end of a virtual tunnel.....

have you considered signing up to a silver surfer type course at a local college or maybe something through the Job Centre?

most driving jobs will now involve using some form of hand held device to manage deliveries, from directing you to the next address, confirming delivery by scanning a barcode and taking a photo, and logging any breakages or items the customer declines

have you considered the care sector? Some jobs require "working towards" NVQ level 2 (adults) or 3 (children) but you can work as a personal assistant (PA) for an individual with nothing more than a DBS check. This does not have to be personal care, but helping someone get to the bank, go shopping. The person needing care would get a Direct Payment from the council and then use that to employ you. If you worked for more than one person you could remain self employed. When I commissioned this sort of thing we paid a minimum of £12.50 an hour but that was a while ago as I changed jobs. We always had a shortage of PAs. Think about the people you could work with, kids, disabled people or older people and then search for "personal assistant jobs place and sector". You might find your council has an "introduction" service to match potential carers with clients.
