Ok so my 2012 GSA should be here next week, I read lots of posts and have learnt loads already. I know there tricks but what are they and why, have read that bike should be started on the centre stand, I presume this s for oil starvation, but what else is there?

you can actually start it on the sidestand providing you stand on the footpeg (left hand side for health & safety reasons)

positioning of the tax disc is very important, and dont forget the tyres cant be filled with any old air.

BMW's have been started on the side stand without any problems since 1928 .

There is an oil pump. The engine oil isn't circulated by gravity.

Think about it. All the oil is in the sump. So using your theory about oil starvation would mean the complete engine would be oil starved.

Vertical singles, twins, triples, fours and sixes haven't got a hope in hell then!

Bring back the good old days when the oil needed squirting in the engine every five miles or so.

Just ride the feekin thing, please please dont be one of those peeps who buy a touring bike to do only 500 miles a year .
there is a 06 GSA in a local garage with only 6000 miles on it

Will it start on the side stand then? ...... thought there was a inhibitor switch to prevent it?

The inhibitor stalls the bike if a gear is selected whilst the stand is down.

I suppose it is the 1200 section. I think you might be referring to gear selection with side stand down.

He might be thinking of the 1100GS models. They won't even start in neutral with the side stand down, unlike the 1150 and 1200 models which will.

Did 7500 miles last year hope to do the same this year.

Nothing happens on my R1100 with the sidestand down, the fuel pump dosent make its whirring noise and the engine wont start but I guess thats due to the beautiful uniqueness of my R1100 .... BMW cheapened things from then on and its all gone downhill

Don't leave it idling when you start it up. Just start and ride (like you would in a car).
Don't give it any throttle when starting (it says so in the manual).
If parking for longer periods (overnight) use the centre stand.
It will wheelie in 2nd just off the throttle with the correct technique. It will then try to veer to one side while on the back wheel. Counter steering corrects this
Your sports bike riding mates will think you're an animal, especially once you get into 3rd on the back wheel

No point hanging off when cornering. It doesn't really help on the GS. Just scrape your toes instead.

I'm also awaiting delivery of my first GS and as part of my commuting routine have always pulled my previous bike out of the garage and left it ticking over on the side stand whilst I put my jacket, gloves and lid on.
Does letting it tick over for a few minutes do some sort of damage?
