Tu-Te what do they stand for
Please forgive my stupidity but I was just looking at my ins and it is for a te but I have a tu HELP

TU - usual means technical update model.
TE - Travel Edition but that was only the later water cooled models.

So what were the derivatives on the 2013gsa
I thought it was te and tu
As the spec what has changed ??

TU - just stands for the technical Update model i.e. Twin cam model from 2010 onwards. From memory the only editions other than standard in 2013 where 90th anniversary and triple black. What does your log book/invoice say?

Log book said tu
But insurance quoted te
By any chance would anyone know what the update is or was ?

Just checked mine, an 09 and it is a TU (Tech Upgrade as stated before) Seems to refer to models with the alloy front panel on the side panels as against the earlier all plastic ones.
Useful link with lots of info.http://www.r1200gs.info/misc/specs/

Looks like insurance quote for a new water cooled TE GS.

Mine's a TU which my insurers couldn't find on their database & went with TE.

Think its because the TU is not a model as such but more of a Mk1,Mk2 etc not a RT, ST, GS and Adventure. TU seems to indicate modifications and technical spec changes/differences to earlier model. I would just tell them its a 1200GS and the year that should do it. Insurance companies are not the brightest when asking for quotes. Took several goes to get them convinced that my Suzuki Vitara 4X4 was not a type of sports bike!!

surely TU was never an official BMW model designation? there was never a TE hexhead, and i'm surprised the insurers managed to enter it on their system. i suspect they've quoted for a 2013 LC.

I'd agree, the TE is a Touring Edition LC GS. There were hexhead model updates designated MU and TU - I had a MU and I thought the TU was the twin cam update - but those aren't model designations for insurance.

I was looking at a 2008 GSA this week and the log book said "mod update" what exactly does this mean ?? I take it it's a MU that I have seen mentioned on the forums but what does it mean for me, buying second hand??

So even if I find a late 2007 with MU on the log book it could be the 2008 model?

My 2008 MU GSA had the model description "R 1200 GS ADVENTURE MU" on the V5, there was also an engine power increase on the MU, it should show on the V5 as 77kW not the 74kW of the earlier version. What colour is the bike?

The 2007 I am going to look at on Wednesday has the black seat with red stripe and metallic white tank.

I didn't know that and just checked my V5. It's say Adv MU and 77kw

Cheers

That sounds like the older version, but the power output details from the V5 would help. If you can get the last 7 digits of the VIN you can run them through the BMW VIN decoder at http://bmwarchive.org which should tell you things like the build date, factory fit options (in German!) and the power output.

Thanks for the help, I'm new to this BMW mularchy and to be pointed in the right direction is worth its weight in gold.
Cheers.
