I have just got my first GS, a low mileage 2002 1150 (black engine - so one of the fast ones). I am very impressed with it and must say it is powerful enough, I feel competent enough to thrash the living daylights out of it which was something I couldn't do with my last bike. Whilst that is a reflection on my bottle/ sense of my own mortality and skill (or lack) as the last bike was a much modified ZRX1200S (170 hp/100lb ft) and was too powrful for me to take to the limit except on the Autobahn and then only once a year whilst on holiday.

I am interested in modifying the 1150, I am not so interested in hp but more torque and better fuel economy would be good.

There was an interesting thread: -

The concensus being that Phil78 was full of shite, but was he; as he never responded to request a for a dyno chart and is any of what he was doing worth while.

I have a few questions that someone should be able to answer.

1) Higher compression (can) = more power per charge of fuel?

2) Catalysed petrol vehicles run rich to keep the cat cool?

3) The RT heads and headers are better for power?

So my basic grasp of tuning has made me think that HC pistons, RT heads and headers, a custom fuel programme to run lean and an exhasut with a baffle should give the same or better power but improved fuel economy. As well as being as quiet as the standard bike.

I have tried searching for extra HP (not sauce) and found that Hayabusa levels of power are fun and exciting some of the time but real world usable power is what counts. As well as 50 or so mpg.

Any replies or directions to info' already here would be good.

Thanks

Mark

lean a gs out anymore and head for trouble, they run lean

, dump the cat 1st, buy a techtronic or similar to adjust mixture, this is a good power increase
k an n was a waste of money,
some other pistons off the range may be higher comp, again, i think an awfull lot of money for little result.
dumpin the cats the thing,

Advice taken

Hello Digger06,

bought a techlusion (awaiting arrival), a cat replacement pipe, already has a K and N.

That's for the initial tuning job.

I have also bought some new old stock 1150 barrels from eBay, sourcing a bottom end and some High Comp pistons with high lift cams for the long term plan (12 months or so). This will make a replacement 'hot' motor - bbpower do quote 100+ r/w hp, we'll see.

I'll let you know how I get on.

ISTR some posts from a member called Vendome (not seen his name for a while...) on this subject. Try a search for him.
