Two up with luggage how do you get on off??

Ok....Now for my serious answer

This is how we do it.....Sort of!

Rider on bike fully loaded with panniers, topbox, tankbag and rolltopbags ontop of panniers.

Firstly....Make sure 'both' pillion pegs are down and brace yourself with both feet on the ground with your hand holding the frontbrake lever on ready for the pillion to climb onboard.

Then get pillion to climb onboard from the nearside using his/her leftfoot on footpeg and use riders left shoulder as a support.

Lift rightleg and carefully swing leg over the top of pillion seat and carefully sit down without unsettling the bike to much.

Practice makes perfect and if you've not done it before give it a few goes. What's the worst thing that could happen?

I'm sure other folks will do it differently but do what suits you and your pillion.

Hope this helps.

Clearly im a numb nuts, but i only ever really ride one up swinging a leg over and these things are huge. humour me:D

Doh ok.....

Rider on first...move bike onto flat ground that will enable a straight take-off (Ie not facing the wrong way in your garage or parked in a tightish parking spot...make her walk 20 feet to a sensible spot with hard ground for your feet!)

Get sorted, start bike, check in neutral, Side stand up*, left brake on,...check both pillion pegs are down, both feet down and steady
Look at pillion and nod (or when she's used to it, the way you relax will signal her/him to get on
She gets on from left side
Her left hand placed on your left shoulder to balance (and let you know she's about to dump weight on you)
Her left foot on left pillion peg, she leans forwards (so weight is balanced and stands up on peg, swings right leg over (or across, depending on agility/leg length/top box etc)
She sits down (at this stage she will probably have one hand on each shoulder) and sorts her feet out, wiggles, takes hands off your shoulders, which is your signal to go (Or check with her for the first few dozen times until you're both used to the routine)

Getting off is almost exactly the same in reverse, but it's important she doesn't try and get off while YOU sort yourself out...again, a nod or a signal is sensible.

Don't try putting her on first.....kicking your partner in the tits is not a good way of starting a journey.

*sounds stupid, but I have seen a couple fall slowly over to the right as she got on with the side stand down....her weight compressed the suspension so the stand was enough to overbalance them.:blast

My how we laughed

If you genuinely haven't taken a pillion on a heavy bike with luggage before, it could even be worth starting off in a car park and practice slowing, stopping and turning.

PS don't forget to ask your mum if you can go out :D

... and if the pillion is a novice tell them to keep their weight over the bike as they get on - even the most petite pillion in an abseiling pose can cause grief

what I do is have the bike on the side stand for more stability
She gets on
I flip the stand up
Wobble up the road wondering where all this weight came from

Is that a sensible answer for a perfectly sensible question ?

No.

Thankyou FP, i think we just need to give it a go, not sure what a side stand can take my thought was should we put bike on the centre stand getting on (not off), pillion first and shuffle back, Clearly i am over (or is that under) thinking it.

No, when the rider's on get the bike upright and lift the side stand up before the pillion gets on ..... as if you were preparing to move off. THEN the pillion gets on :thumb2:thumb2

I wouldn't bother with the stand, balance the bike and use your legs to support the bike and pillion......Just give it a go carefully and tell the 'missus' not to do anything to 'unsettle' the bike.

Fanums advice is 'spot on' and much more detailed than mine:thumb

Once the bike's moving the weight will almost disappear.....Just be careful in corners and at low speed.

If it's any consolation my first pillion was a seventeen stone bloke on the back of an F650 Funduro......Your GSA is an excellent bike for riding two up with a full load.

If you can do it and do it well, riding off the centre stand can look :cool
But don't do it.....you get it a teeny bit wrong (and you will) and it will be :eh :blush

And lots of

:jes:jes
From anyone within sight :D

I was informed by my dealer that the left hand pannier contained folding steps, that were deployed when the pannier was opened.

For a first time pillion a pair of bluetooth headsets really help.

My niece is a great pillion but teaching her to get on, and more especially off was a challenge as she gets a bit giddy and tries to rush. She managed to fall off by getting herself wrapped around the pillion peg while getting off to shut a gate behind us.

Bluetooth headset means I can talk her through getting on off which slows her down and prevents her trying to get off before we have fully stopped :eek

You have already had good advice on how to mount/dismount... but definitely best with all stands up, feet flat on floor, I find leaning forward helps give a bit more room for the pillion to get on or off.

ps I do find the bike handles better with a pillion too.
