Tyre Advice Please
I have an R80 (79 vintage) and have just suffered a rear wheel puncture which necessitates a new tyre. My local dealer says the Metzeler 4.00 -18 M/C 64V which he is replacing is no longer available. He suggests he fits a Metzeler 130-80-18. My concern is the new tyre will be wider and I had a lot of difficulty getting the old deflated carcase past the brake shoes and the nearside swing arm. Can anyone share their experience on which tyre to have fitted that will pass through the gap between brake shoes and swing arm? Thanks for any assistance.

In my experience getting a tyre past the brake shoes and lower shock mount is always a deflate and ‘squeaky squeaky’ time.
And a 120/90 Avon Roadrider fits very well.

Avon road riders are available as a 4.00 size. Friend just fitted this to a Z1.
130 is way too wide.

What’s currently fitted on the front?
I’d try and keep to a similar style for the rear if possible.
As said above a 130 is too wide,
My experience of Avon tyres is they seem to come up a bit wide anyway.
I’d look at the continental “Classic style “
RB2,K112
4x18 rear
325 x19 front

The front is a Metzeler Lasertec 3.25-19 M/C 54H. it is about 25% worn.

Looking at the Metzeler website it does seem to be discontinued,
What date stamp is on the front tyre?
I’d be tempted to fit a matched pair in any case ,as a replacement rear only may have a different profile and may upset the handling.

Lasertec not made for years…. Splash the cash and buy a matching pair in correct sizes.
I like the Continental classic radials, buyt everyone is diffeeent

A good call, have looked at my front tyre and I am now in the market for front and rear tyres.

That’s good…. Don’t put your health at risk with old tyres as they are the only contact with the road.
Also, use correct sizes, as larger tyres are not better.

Thanks for the advice on tyres, bike has some new shoes and they are now fitted to the bike. 36 mile test ride last night and all is well. Time to test the tread edges.
