maybe you could ask (desole j'y pige que dalle aux ordis...) our garlic friend from nice, can't remember his user name, if he could find out tyre prices might justify another trip out there...

It seems that whatever tyres folk put on their bike, they are always pleased with them.

Is it because all tyres are actually pretty good (ie better than the rider)? Or is it because the rider chose Brand X and feels obliged to justify that their choice was best......

:P

Greg

Good point Greg, after 1200 miles the Tourances I've just fitted don't seem any better than the Trailwings they replaced, which probably means I haven't got to the edge of either tyres limits, as I ride a bit quick "for an old fart on a BMW" I'm happy so far:D , butI'm hoping however to get a bit more than 5200 miles out of them! If I don't I may try another make next time:confused:
Out of interest I asked 3 other local biker friends, most with 20+ years riding experience, Blackbird/FJR1300/Intruder1400, seems they all have Marques they are loyal to, but have fitted whats available at times and haven't noticed the difference!!!

Seems we're all prone to good marketing at times

That would be "Franco"

You`re right. The 020 I had on the rear lasted about 5k whereas I can get 7-8k from the tourances

Ive only tried Tourances on my GS so cant compare them to anything else, but have no complaints with the levels of grip.

that's the one thanx stef, being a michelin man he's bound to say anarkees are best...
probably stick with tourances, as they say; if it ain't broke...

Just ordered new pair (90/99-21 + 130/80-17) of Tourances from reifenversand.com, Germany.

Their price is 149 e + delivery costs about 25 Eur, but we made up kind of group order so delivery costs per tyre get low.

Same time "official" importer is asking 278 Eur !! :gosh

On Anakees at the moment, very good wet & dry, definitely equal to, but not sure whether they're actually better than Tourances in terms of grip, but certainly wear faster. So in view of prices & wear rate it will probably be Tourances again :)

Hello fellow GS'ers. Just joined this site & this is my first post/reply. Here in the states on our comparable Advriders.com web site the concensus on tires seems to be the Michelin Anakees as being the most popular. I've not tried them thus far so my preference to this point has been Pirelli's MT90 Scorpions. I like the handling they provide & they offer good traction on dry pavement although a little intimidating in the rain. Of importance to me is the mileage I get out of a set of tires & the Pirelli's last me about 10,000 miles for a rear & around 13,000-14,000 on the front before they cup. Also, I run 38 lbs. of pressure front & rear. I'd like to know what pressure others are using as i'm sure this affects both handling & longevity.

lads at the moment i use tourances and dont have any complaints
But at the moment im doing a bit of forrestry track riding etc
is there any tyre which would have any match or closest for both on and off road riding ??

Just had a pair of Metzeler ME-880 Marathons fitted to the Adv. I thought I'd try them, as the dealer here reckoned they'd handle just as well, but last longer. They're a pure 'road' tyre, rather than 'town & country' Tourances. They're recommended fit for the K1200LT and, the guy reckons, the rears are good for 20k plus on them

If he's even half right, these are going to save me a lot of money (I've done 5k in the first month :P...). I was getting 7 1/2 - 8k from a rear Tourance and double that from a front.

First impressions are favourable (although I've only done 75 miles, all in good weather). Just as sticky as Tourances, although I'm running them (at the dealer's recommendation) at 42psi front & rear

The sizes aren't identical - the front is a 100/90 (as opposed to a 110/80 Tourance) and the rear is a 160/70 (compared with a 150/70 Tourance). This made the fit of the hugger fairly tight, but, after a little adjustment, it fitted OK...

I'll let you know how things progress...

Mike:)

Yo Biggles.....

Arn't yanky miles less than uk ones?

very interested on ur report on them...

What kind of mileage will I get out of Trailwings?

While we're on the subject, what kind of mileage can I expect on the (original) Trailwings? Bikes at 3K miles now and I have a tour down to Spain/touch Portugal end of Apr. I'm not overly gentle with them, but I was expecting to make it to 7-8K on the rear.

Does that sound reasonable?

My 1100GS came with the Pirellis on it. I HATE them. I find them very scary in the wet and have even had a few rear wheel skips and slides in the dry, even 2-up.
My spoked wheels are off the bike at the moment (as I have cast wheels fitted), but I will be fitting tourances on the spoked ones in the coming 2-3 weeks.
Shame, as there is plenty of thread left on the Pirellis (at least 5000 miles worth).
I may even advertise them here for free - if someone wants to pay the postage.

Just my 2 cents worth

Dunlop Trailmax

My new 1200 came with these fitted.

Anybody any experience of these, I think they are new?

Enduro 4 front tyre

My 1150 came with an enduro 4 on the front and tourance rear. Doing lots of miles (50k in 2 years), I generally get 12k out of a set of tyres. I have found the Enduro 4 quicker steering and more planted than the Tourance front. The only problem is the Enduro 4 is no longer made as a BMW fit, but the Honda Varedero tyre is the same fit, so this is the one I use and am very pleased with it.

Got a enduro 4 110/80R19 today for £59.56 not fitted get it done for a couple of jars elswhere.
How does it compare with yourexperience on price?
:beerjug:

Tried an Enduro 4 on my first change of tyres. Crap in the wet and cup as quick as the Distanzias 2.5-3K. Anyone had any experience of the Conti Escape???

OE Trailwings were horrible and I repleced them with Pirelli MT90s.
They're ok and have done a track day and seen plenty wet weather. I always use Bridgestone BT010 on sports bikes and they are simply the best tyres I've ever used so I'll be giving the BT 020 a go.

Had the BT 020's fitted just before our French trip on the 21st .
I have now covered about 500 miles on them, I would say that they speed the turning up, are quieter & smoother at high speed,
The back is solid in the dry & wet, The front is great in the dry it really clings on but does feel like it is moving about a bit,it dosen't let go it is just a lot more communative, Now for the bad side because of this the front feels a little nervous in the wet, but only when cantered over,it never let's go it just feels alive, I think it just needs getting used to, it feels more like a conventional front end from say a Fireblade, you get a lot more feedback

Would I say that they were better than the Tourances?????
It's a tough call but they do put the power down better & ultimately they hang on better to. If you just plod about stick with the Tourances, But if you like to throw your GS into bends go for the BT 020's:D

some one mentioned pirellis were crap and not a patch on the metz tourance, well pirelli/metz share same info /design /tecnology just differant tread pattern same compound rubber. most tyres are good enough for road use differances come in off road abilaty. any thing 70/30 road based is right,if your names valentino then you might want something stickyer.in my opinion its all in the mind,i know people who do track days on the hardest of touring rubber and are fast then people who tell me that they need corsas just for the road cos standard diablos slide all over the road even though their tyres have an inch n alf to go before the edge.
