I need new tyres on the GSA,
The main dealer is telling me to make sure I get Tourance EXP's and the local tyre place is saying that the older,non EXP ones are better
The local place is also £100 cheaper, not that I would pay main dealer prices anyway.
I have found the EXP's for a similar price to the older, ones so which are better ??

Do you want to prioritise grip (EXP) or longevity (original Tourance)? It's as simple as that.

Then I disagree with the consensus. EXPs are grippier and if you like to ride hard, especially in the wet, they're superior.

They are both good but for my money the Tourance is the better deal if you intend to green lanes, rutted tracks etc.
I've used both but could not detect the EXPs better grip in any conditions . Maybe I don't ride quick enough to see the difference.
The choice is yours

I do ride it reasonably hard occasionally and never noticed low grip levels, except on freshly deposited mud from a tractor , but not too many tyres help there.
Think i'll go for the older ones this time.

Never that keen on the original tourances on my 1150, I'd ridden 1200's on Conti trail Attacks which i really liked but mine came with tourance exp's . They were fine for the first 3000 miles and then the rear started to square very badly and the handling has gone off.
It is costing me £186 locally for a pair of Trail Attacks fitted and balanced.

Trail Attacks for me (after trying almost every other combination over the past twelve years). More than enough grip wet or dry, long lasting and (their trump card over Tourances ) they don't square off significantly.

Are you going off road at all Podrick?? If you are and you still want an 'adventure' tyre then I really recomend the Dunlop TR91.

I'm always happy to try new tyres and experiment, but having tried these I wouldn't use another adventure tyre now. Excellent tyre.

(if yer not planning on going off road at all ...... choices choices ... ).

My EXP are due to be changed and will be going back to the older Tourance- far superior grip in my opinion.

Would be interested to know where you have found them for £100 cheaper as I'm Somerset as well.

No plans in the near future to go off road,
The conti's do look like a good tyre.

Most modern tyres are very good nowdays (think back to twenty years ago before silicone, hot chilli compounds etc etc..).

If you're not going off road then I really wouldn't bother getting an 'adventure' tyre. If it was me I'd get either Roadsmarts or Pilot Roads. (And I'd get Roadsmarts ... ).

I am just about to replace my rear Tourance EXP prior to my Germany trip, I reckon another 900 miles max and it is shot (3000 miles). I know I am heavy on rear tyres as my riding style isnt the best but I expected more from a rear to be honest, I was getting more than 2000 miles out of a Mich 2CT on a 170bhp GSXR1000, so I thought I would eek out a bit more than 3000 miles! Good tyres though, and they stood up to all that North Scotland could throw at them (Snow/Hail/crap road surfaces/no road surfaces). I have read a bit about the original Tourances being longer lasting with the same grip levels so next time I will have a shop around.

And there's summit I've never understood - why fit pseudo off road tyres if you never go off road

Best off road/road tyre I've used is the Heidi K60 mud&snow.

Best road only tyre I've used is the Avon Azaro/ST combo, I'm on my 3rd set now. I suspect Roadsmarts/PR's may be slightly better but I love the Avons, they suit my ride perfectly so see no reason to change

For pure road riding - Roadsmarts for me. I'm on my 3rd set on the GSA and fourth set on my K1100RS. The only problem is the <5K mile life on the rear but then that is self inflicted so must not grumble

For pure road riding I am a fan of Conti Road attacks. Good grip, last reasonably, don't square off too bad.
I had 3 sets of the original attacks on my previous GS, the rears lasted 6K and the fronts lasted 12K.

My GSA came with tourance (don't know which one) the rear lasted 4K and squared off badly. There was still plenty of meat on the front but I was swapping to road rubber so now have road attack 2's on (£214 the pair fitted).

So far they they seem to be just as good as the originals (only done 500 miles so far).
They seem to run in quicker/easier than the tourances but I don't know if that is comparing a squared off tyre against a fresh one one or if it is down to the tread pattern.

Hi,

A few mentions here of Tourance EXPs squaring off badly whilst others don't. If you ride predominantly on motorways and long straightish roads your tyres will square off. I don't think it matters what make of tyre you have it just happens because of the type of riding you do - surely?

But as you say most modern tyres are good. I use Anakees do not go off road and get 10000miles from the rear tyre.

Now just tell me how slow I must be to achieve these mileages

Previously I had Bridgestone BT?? 3000 Miles shagged out same riding style same bike. No appreciable difference in Wet or Dry
