UK club trials ...Pipster and Eartmovers first event ...

Entered my first trial in a long time a couple of weeks ago with Mark who has just taken up the sport as well

We arrived early doors entered and did all the ACU licence form ...The trial was one of Cheshire youths local events and I must say very well organized and a good Craig a real friendly club

Trials is such a cheap sport ...ACU licence £10 most entries around £10/12 some clubs £5 to join...then you can pick up a good used bike for around £1500 or as new as an 08 for £2500 most of the modern bikes are on a par with each other.. Beta ...Gas Gas ...Scorpa ...take your time the good bikes are out there ...no need to buy new lots of the more serious guys changing there bikes every couple of years ..

Here's a a few photos of a novice section...Most trials have two or three route depending on ability mine being very average I ride the novice route...at this trial you could also do the beginner route or the inter/expert route .... these guys are so skillful its a pleasure to watch them in action

And exiting section ..The idea is to ride the section with out dabbing one foot down and you get a 1 mark penalty 2 then 3 if you dab more than 3 times that's OK but fall off or fail to complete the section and its 5 marks ...

Most trials are 10 sections X 4 laps = 40 sections and all the penalty point are added up and the one with the least marks in each group wins

Come on Timpo its about time you added a trials bike to your stable then your have something to do when all the greenlanes are out of bounds

its the best value motorsport you can get you can ride all day at a organised event for about a tenner

Really not sure I can justify another toy in the garage... but it is really tempting

I used to ride Trials in the early 70's at first on a Tiger Cub, then a 500HT Ariel, then a chair was added and my dad and me did a year or so with the sidecars. Culminating in a southern area open to centre win, and a few trophies in the cupboards

I then stopped for a number of years but went back to solo trials in my mid 30's on a twin shock TY250, then a John Shirt TY250 Both bikes were passed their best and more modern lighter monoshock bikes were finding grip where there was none for me

No money in those days left me struggling to find any confidence in my bikes/or my ability.

I was pretty crap though and the kids were running rings around me, a few offs and silly injuries took me away from the sport.

I did enjoy it though

I rode the white route, which was a lot easier than Phil's!
Not sure how long they let you ride in the "Beginners" class, but I'll find out.
Shep, the next event locally to me is at Frodsham on the 21st, where it is a Pre 65/twinshock competition. I'm going to make up the numbers.

Very different to what I rode in the past Only 67kg fueled and ready to ride the fuel tank is built into the frame ...

The only problem is they are so much easier to ride but the sections are a lot tighter as well

Saying that the Twinshock and Classic scene is really popular and they do the traditional no stop rule at a lot of the classic events

The white route was pretty easy for most of the sections. That greasy hill climb caught me out every time though.
Funnily enough it was the same kind of section that I "fived" in the Corwen trial as well. That and missing a marker on two seperate laps!

I managed to get 3rd in the beginners class, out of six .
But these two were 1st and 2nd.

Used to do a lot of trials many years ago, rode a Fantic 200 twin shock, great fun and after seeing those photos, who knows !

We had a trailer made out of angle iron, must have weighed a ton ! we used to rope the bikes on, no ratchet straps and pull the lot with a Mini Metro !

Had some good times !

Did my first trial yesterday, absolutely top day out, have no idea where I finished and don’t care (read I was last behind several 8 year olds).



As has been said, cheap to get into and once kitted out and licenced, entry fees are reasonable and the bike uses about 2 litres of fuel all day!

My club, Bexleyheath, are full of friendly and helpful folk, ready to give advice. Polite too, as even the children didn’t laugh (out loud) at my (many) fruitless attempts to get up a slippery bank.



In equal measures it can be incredibly frustrating and brilliantly satisfying, one minute you can’t ride without riding over your own foot and the next you’re ready to take on the world champ. All in all though, a great day, full of laughs and bruises….

I was having a wander over the peaks, surprised there is still snow.

Road got a little worse, snow side to side with 2 ruts.
