I have a 2610 and currently have CN Version 7 maps installed on the computer and downloaded to the GPS unit. So far so good.

Using the Install wizard, I have now installed CN version 8 maps and have had a message pop up saying that it was succesful. So far so good.

I have been asked to Unlock the maps and have typed in the 25 digit Unlock code that came with the original Version 7 maps. I get a message saying that the maps have been unlocked. However if I try to look at the V8 maps the yellow message at the bottom right hand side of the screen just says "Map Detail locked" but if I toggle between V7 and V8, the earlier version is fine.

Should I have had a new Unlock Code with CN Version 8? :nenau

Hello mate,

As said above.... V8's are knocking around but are like a chocolate teapot without the new unlock codes.

If its a second hand one then get in touch with previous owner as you can unlock the maps to TWO different units. I have just done this myself.

If you have to buy an unlock code then its about £45 - £50 to get a new code.

With V9 comming out in the new year I would order that and pay for the unlock as opposed to unlocking what is essentially out of date maps.

From reading Noels post, it should be a matter of just getting the necessary unlock code from the Garmin website by the sound of it. I've had the Version 8 maps sent to me by Garmin nearly a year ago, (I made sure that I was entitled to the free upgrade before I contacted them) but my steam driven work computer didn't have a DVD reader so I was stuffed. Its only now that I've been given an upgraded work computer (with DVD reader) :thumb that I can install the thing.

Because the Unlock Code for Version 7 came with the original disks, I just assumed that I used the same code for Version 8. I'll have a stab at getting the new code this evening - no doubt you will hear from me later. :D

I may be getting ahead of myself here, but assuming that I get V8 unlocked and working properly, to save unecessary use of memory (which the company has paid for after all) can I remove the Version 7 maps, or will I just have to live with them? :nenau

I take it the City Nav v8 you have is an upgrade and not a full version?

I made a similar mistake and purchased a pukka set of City Select v7 update disks from eBay (yes, I know they were originally free from Garmin) thinking I could install that before putting City Navigator v8 on (this I had ordered from Garmin as a free upgrade). Garmin wouldn't provide an unlock code for City Select v7 as it wasn't current, no way around that :( Now CN v9 is out I think it'll get the same response.

You may ask why I wanted CS v7 when I had CN v8 for free... It's a tile size thing that effects only the Quest (and a few other less recent models) and its fixed limited amount of memory.

Yes, just checked the Version 8 and its clearly marked "Update DVD" which I'm guessing means that I can't delete Version 7.

TAFF.

From what I remember I had a similiar problem to yours. I automatically thought all I had to do was put in my Update Disc and follow instructions.

Eventually, out of frustration,(!!) I went to the unlock page on "My Garmin" account. There I saw an option to "Unlock an update disc." I was given another 25 digit number and put that in.

Presto, all was okay.I now have a Version 7 & 8 I can look at (just to see the difference).

Hope that helps ya.

Be Safe.

Not sure if CN v8 is officially discontinued yet but I think Garmin don't support anything but the current version, that includes issuing unlock codes. AFAIK were now officially on CN v9 as updates are now shipping (for the NT version at least). That's my experience the the City Select v6 > City Select v7 problems I had, was trying to use MyGarmin but resorted to phone and email when that failed. City Nav v8 was out when I was trying to get a CS v7 update to work.

If you can't get it to work it'll cost you £40-£45 to upgrade to City Nav v9.
