I am not to sure what this is about, what is Beta software?

Plus, I am bit worried about the wording in red towards the bottom of the download page, regarding that it has not been used in production yet, as in:-

"Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk."

& also

Beta software is upgraded software that has not yet been fully tested - an early draft if you like. If you use it, in effect you are a Garmin guinea pig. We sometimes get asked to use them in work, but have never done it as we rely totally on our work system and can do without the hassle of finding and reporting glitches. If you do go ahead though and can't find any problems, I suppose you get the satisfaction of knowing that you've got the upgraded software benefits before everyone else.

I have often used beta software. It is sort of a pre-market release. Nothing scary about it. Your computer will not go up in flames and your harddisk rarely explodes.

Don't worry about it if you like to try it, just do it. Worst case you get some funny stuff, a feature that doesn't work well here or there, but what else is new?

It's a bit like buying a 1200 really

No, it's a program that turns your laptop into a giant gps unit. You attach a gps receiver to the serial port or the USB port of the laptop, take the laptop with you in the car/camper/truch/GS... and the screen shows the map, just like it does on a GPS unit.

The laptop also shows driving instructions and gives you speach guidance.

The screen looks like this:

No, quite a sensible one...

Have installed nRoute, it is a sepreate program to mapsource, though it is installed in the same directory as MapSouce and appears to use the maps in MapSource. Its main role is to act as a interface to your GPS whilst out on the road. The following is a quote from the nRoute Help pages.

Garmin nRoute is an application designed to use Garmin GPS technology integrated with a laptop or portable computer to provide you with navigational guidance. You can use nRoute to:

· Create waypoints, routes, and tracks to help you navigate;

· Find items, addresses, and Points of Interest included in the map data;

· Gather information about your travels, including average speed, trip duration, etc.; and,

· Import and export data as .mps files.

Thanks a lot, so is the main advantage over a 2610 just the size? that is of course if you were using it in a car/camper/truck, bit of a disadvantage on the ole GS! unless you'r planning Migsel to make a new mount!!
