You don't update mapsource, you simply add the latest maps to your PC. Mapsource is a program for planning routes etc, it uses simply the maps it finds on the PC. Plenty of posts on here about downloading the maps to your PC, have look first. Then go to the Garmin site and follow the instructions for downloading the maps. I think it is under an "Advanced" heading were you can choose to download to the unit, which I presume you have done already) or the PC or both. If you still can't work it out I am sure someone better qualified than me will come along to help.

As John above says, you are updating your maps to PC/mapsource. However I think there is a software update on Mapsource itself, last update October 2013. Garmin not supporting Mapsource from?? any time soon.
Download Basecamp and have a play. It has got better.

Just done update for Mapsource again. Under Help on Taskbar. Installed latest info to improve Mapsource. Get em whilst they are still on offer.

Not sure what you are updating, As far as I know the last Mapsource update was a few years ago now. Maybe if you have a very old version it might update to the last one. I don't know because I checked from time to time and kept mine up to date. It has been saying no updates for a while now.

UPDATING MAPSOURCE MAPS

how to install the update map onto the pc for mapsource.

The zumo had the latest map installed on the device with a memory card so when garmin express trys to install or I click reinstall a map it will install to the zumo.

I disconnected the zumo remove the memory card and plugged it back in.
Start Garmin express and select reinstall maps, it then says there isn't enough memory whick make it show a different screen asking to install partial maps. At the bottom there is a box that says device. Change this to pc instead of zumo and select full coverage map. It will then install onto the pc.

Can you confirm what version of Garmin Express you are using? Ta

Latest version of Garmin express now gives the option of downloading maps to device, PC or both. Just click on the advanced button. If it says device up to date just click on reinstall maps & go to the advanced button & choose where it's going. No need anymore to remove sd card.

Back to the OP's question.

Yes, carry out an update of your maps on your PC, too. That way the maps on your GPS will match those on your PC.

If you never use the maps on your PC for plotting routes it won't matter if you don't and you can leave things just as they are. If you do, then it's best practice to have the same maps on both the PC and the GPS device.

If the maps differ it is not the complete end of the world, even so. What will happen is this:

You plot your route on your PC as normal.

You then send (export) it to your GPS device.

All fine so far.

You then turn your GPS device on and.... You get a message along the lines of.... The routes were created in a different map, would you like to recalculate? Yes or no.

If you say no, then there is a chance that the route will be displayed as a series of straight lines between whatever waypoints or via points you created. Depending on the number used the straight lines may near enough follow the roads you wanted to take. If you just had a start and end point, you may well just see a straight line between the two points.

You do not always get the straight lines. Sometimes it just looks entirely normal and you'd never know.

If you click Yes, then the device will stop for a while whilst it recalculated the route. GPS devices are not blessed with a huge processor, so it might take a while. Anyway, eventually it will finish and the route will be displayed.... But..... And here is the important bit..... It might not follow exactly the route you wanted to take. This is only important if you really really really wanted to see your old aunt who lives on the corner of some obscure village track whilst en-route to Tesco to buy soft fruits...

The device knows nothing about your aunt, where she lives and cares even less than I do.... So instead of routing down some obcsure track that took you three hundred yards off what was otherwise a sensible road to Tesco .... It cuts her out! Annoying for you but maybe a blessing for your aunt. Who can tell?

There is no hard and fast rule about how the device might recalculate. It will depend on the way and via points you put in (if any), maybe your pre-set preferences and / or any pre-set avoidances you set up long ago on the advice and have long since forgotten, the length and maybe the complexity of the route and for all I know the colour of your trousers.

In short, it makes life a lottery and you may not win.

Match the maps on your PC to those on the device and all should be well. Most of the errors (not all, just most) on modern GPS devices are now down to the operator and / or their expectations of how a dumb (but really quite clever) device SHOULD work. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Like a genius child, it still needs help.

John you are correct I have put mapsource on new laptop and it was old version. Therefore when seeing if I could update it, it did, last update available Mapsource version 6.16.3

Still prefer it to Basecamp though. Luddite that I am.

Andrew

Me too, can't see the point of Basecamp.. (unless you're using a Mac thingy..)

It's not harder than MapSource just very different. Remember BaseCamp is for every Garmin user bar people that mess about in boats. That's the reason for the new program.

I don't think preferring Mapsource makes you a Luddite, just someone who wants to retain their sanity. Luddites, as I am sure we all know, were a group of people who took to destroying the machines that had taken over their work. So to be a Luddite in this context you would have to want to smash your device. I am sure we have all been tempted when it does not do what we expected but, as Wapping has said ,most problems with Sat Navs these days turn out to be operator malfunction.

I keep updating Basecamp as and when and I still can't see it does anything I need better or easier than Mapsource. Maybe the day will come but it's not yet here.
