I have a Streetpilot III which came with Mapsource V.5. A friend of mine has just brought one which came with V.6. Am I right in thinking that it is not possible for me to use his Mapsource CDs to update my version?

You should be entitled to a free upgrade check out the Garmin web site.

It depends on whether you're refering to the mapping data or the PC software (both of which could have MapSource in their titles).

The PC software is a free upgrade from the Garmin site. Without looking it up, I beleive your options are either v5.4 or v6.0.3 Beta.

The mapping data is something else. MapSource City Navigator Europe v6 is the current release and you would be eligible for a free upgrade only if you first registered your SPIII with Garmin after 1 Dec 2003 - otherwise it's US$150 for the upgrade.

Thanks Greg,

Its the City Navigator I am referring to. Mine was registered in July 2003, so I am out of luck.

Looks like 6.03 beta was shorter lived than 6.02 beta according to Garmins site today! 6.03 seemed to be trying to cure some of 6.02's woes. It'll be good when the PC software is up with the 2610's 2.95 beta capabilities.

PS the 2610 is still available form GPS city for $749.95, and their service is very good.:D

They do ask for identification to prevent credit card fraud which in my case was a copy of my passport and front and rear of the card.

That's an increadible price (£430ish) considering the exchange rate at the moment. Even with import duties it will still under cut rip-off UK prices by a long way.

Import duties

Import duties aren't the one that you don't want to pay as it's only about 4%. But, if you get charged for that I would expect you'll be charged for the VAT on top of that. Not that I have any experience of paying tax on GPS's bought in the USA. :D :D :D
