Recce'ing a few routes lately, I have found that my iPad makes an excellent navigation aid. Because of it's size and the screen reflectivity, I find the only practical place to put it is in my tankbag which means that I have to stop, open the bag etc. to use it. I do this inside the bag which cuts down on the reflection issue and makes the thing perfectly usable.

There are many good navigation apps but the ones I use most are:-

UK Map (which lets you download OS maps for offline use. These are free after paying the £6.99 price of the app . Scales in 1:50k, 1:25k and 1:10k).

GPS Kit - again downloadable maps in several formats (I use Google maps) with various useful features such as track recording and track library, compass, timing, odometer etc. etc.

MotionX GPS (similar to GPS kit).

I use the iPad and these apps more as an instant reference rather than as a live navigation device and they complement the Zumo, they don't replace it.

I have the same apps on my iPhone and of course that can easily be mounted on the handlebars. However, the larger iPad screen is much better when scrolling around over a large area using the OS maps for example.
