USING OIL

anyone experiencing exessive use of oil
ive done over 18,000 in the same amount of months
the last 6,000 i have used over 8 litres the bike is due for service and just wondered what the dealer will make of it
bmw say that it is acseptable to use 1 litre per 1,000
no leaks
no smoke
no dirty plugs
just a slight carbon deposit on the exhuast#
oh and an acrid smell not experienced on previous gs's

your thought please

My 08 used about the same when I bought it with 2k and continued to do so up to the 6k service.
I asked on this site for advice and was told by two people to rev it hard at least once every ride.
I started riding it really hard for a few months and it not only reduced the oil consuption but the performance is fantastic.
I think these engines need and like to work hard at times.
The only problem I see is at 18k you may be too late to get this to work.
Try it and let me know if it works.

Are you using 10 40 ? Some say they burn less oil with 20 50 so that may be worth a try...

It sounds excessive. I assume the dealer will ask you to do a consumption test under their conditions and will then make a decision.

I have a 2008 and it has used almost zero oil in 12000m.

I have noted, however, that the dealer over-filled the oil on both the 6k and 12k service - right to the top of the sight glass - and in both cases the bike used a little - down to the centre of the glass - and that's where it stays.
