V-Strom 800DE

Ian at BRM is running a long termer.

Episode 1

He’s probably my favourite reviewer on YouTube . Should be worth following .
Great bikes.

I see the US market get different spec bikes . This one is a different colour to the UK models but also has a much stronger belly pan and engine bars, neither of which is offered on the UK Tour model .

Did about 110 miles on a DE yesterday and my thoughts from a quick demo in uk last year were confirmed . It’s a bloody brilliant bike .
The throttle is a wee bit snatchy in A mode but perfect in B .
Fuelling is perfect as is quick shifter.
It’ll pull from 20 km/h in 3rd, unlike the Transalp where riding the same roads in Dec 23 I was constantly swapping 2/3/2/3 gears.

The motor may only put out something like 82bhp but it’s laden with mid range grunt .
Screen is actually fine at 75mph on short motorway blast we did .
It’s only lacking cruise to be near perfect .
Hopefully I’ll keep the bike all week though the Vstrom 650 is perfectly fine to ride too .
Might try blag a day on their 800RE too to compare to DE, though the owner of the tour company said he prefers the DE. He likes it so much that he sees no point in buying himself another Africa Twin as the DE is just as good but lighter and cheaper .

Base bike it £12k ish but add three piece hard luggage , heated grips and belly pan and it’s up to £15k which is too much .

But I can see myself getting a low mileage bike and adding a big rear rack for a roll bag then fitting a Veridian cruise control

...And less powerful. But from your experience it has enough and in the right spot so I'm sure it'd be fine for me as well. Unfortunately the lack of cruise and inner tube tyres on a large bike like this keep it from consideration for me.

Veridian do a cruise module and BART tubeless conversion from Italy.
So both issues engineered out.

Had a DE when my T Max was being serviced . Loved it a good do it all bike . Better for me than the RE , tried that as well . This was last year when they had a deal on for panniers box etc all for £9995

Hopefully going to ride the RE later in the week . But the DE has been sublime the last two days and 250 miles on the twistiest roads I’ve ever ridden , such as this

Arsey where are you riding in those nice snow free mountains?

Done nearly 400 miles on 800 DE last 3 days on the twistiest and best roads I’ve ever ridden on . And the DE is sublime . Pretty much faultless apart from lack of cruise . I’ve had numerous bikes with 21/18 wheels in last twenty years and this is the most flick able and best handling of the lot .
I’d say the motor is the best parallel twin on the market . It’s perfect . Been riding in 3rd most of the time . So much grunt . Perfect fuelling in B mode and great gearbox/quickshifter .
There’s a good chance it’ll be my next bike one day , especially if they fit cruise next year .

Is this the one you had to ride the goat track on the way up to it?

So I’ve ridden about 700 miles around Gran Canaria this week on the DE.
I couldn’t have been on a better bike .
Stunning motor, perfect fuelling , smooth gear box and quick shifter, great riding position, the best handling bike with 21/18 wheels I’ve ever ridden and I’ve owned many . Just needs cruise to be perfect . Hopefully coming in 2026.

Highly likely to be my next bike .

Much enthusing.

Same post as Mondays.

We were there last year. Although we just got 125 scooters, the roads as you say are stunning in the sticks.

So the Suzuki is streets ahead of the Voge then?
