Valve clearances ? how easy / difficult??

I was always told finger tight then 1/4 turn for new plugs; 1/8th turn for used plugs.

Halfords do 1/4 to 3/8 and 3/8 to 1/2 adapters.

My cover seals were a bit iffy but not actually split.
I needed to use the bike. Cleaned them with alcohol, smeared Loctite 518 gasket replacer on the old gaskets and never have replaced them. I'll fit new ones next time I do the tappets.

Sent somehow.

Mine would have been no problem, its the poxy crash bar that's the root cause.

Because its been dropped, i cant slide the rocker cover off but have to wiggle it off,

When i go to put the cover back on, i have to roll the base of the rocker cover under the big bolt on the base of the cylinder head.

I noticed this, has shaved a few mag chips off as well, eek!!

i want to do a last check for no contamination before i tighten everything down

This lack of clearance, and having to roll the cover on,

puts the plug turret & gasket into contact with the ""contact spring"",

As this is a sharp sprung steel part, it cuts chunks out of the plug seal :(, or drags the seal off the turret!

There isnt enough space to lever the cover back and put it on later ... :(

What i might do is cable tie the part on, and wiggle it in,

Once its lined up, cut the cable ties and push the cover home .

I'm loath to have a go removing the crash bars,

as knowing my luck, the feckers wont come out, or will strip

I've removed my engine crash bars. I had a low speed tumble on a really muddy lane (recently flooded). It dropped RH down.
I wasn't even bruised so a very trivial fall.
The Touratech rocker protector bent its M6 bolts into Z shape. Thank goodness they were stainless & not high tensile.
The OEM crash bar shoved the rocker cover back by 3mm - any more would have bent the cover screws.
I think only a slightly harder crash could have cracked the cylinder head. I had to remove the crash bar bolts AND the rocker protector as they were rammed into each other.
My GSA now has fuel tank bars only with X-Head protectors on the rocker covers. There are less costly PP plastic covers on eBay. TBH, for the money I could buy replacement rocker covers.
The issue is the crash bars don't protect the rocker covers from tarmac scrapes and even worse they dig in rather than slide so there's great potential for serious damage e.g. cracked cylinder head mounting lugs.

All i could see was 3/8 to 1/4 and 1/2 to 3/8 in store, i was looking last night ;)

Right all the bits turned up yesterday :)

Bright and breezy ( and i mean breezy lol) this morning i was up and at it,

whipped the LH rocker cover off, replaced the seal, and tied it in place :D

In daylight, it was a piece of piss to see the contact spring, and to avoid catching the plug

seal

Once in the correct horizontal plane, i cut the string and retrieved it.

The seal stayed located.

Tightened everything up and torqued off.

Moment of truth time

Started the bike up, and it clattered really loudly, but i gave it a minute, figuring this was

the tensioner re-pressurising.

Sure enough, everything quietened down, with just a slight rumble of the

camchain, and the ticking of the injectors,

Took it out for a spin, and got it nicely warm,

No leaks, and no clattering from the tappets :)

Still a bit of noise from the cam chain area, when revved hard,

but no where to the point where I'm thinking OMG.

I know they are quite noising in a non agricultural way, :)

But this is far quieter than before....

Now i know what to do, i'll quite happily do it again if needs be.

Thanks for alL your help & support :thumb2

Well done. Start to get worried when you can't hear the tappets. No clearance = no noise = burnt valves.
