just about to buy a second hand vario top box ,its open ,but i fear the owner dosnt have an original key to get the barrel out ,in order for me to code it to my ignition key.
is there a way to get the barrel out ,without the key .
many thanks .

topbox key

Hi
I don´t think he´s refering to the original key

"Insert your key and remove the cylinder from the barrel (the key will keep the tumblers in place until you are ready to start switching them around):"

I think that the idea is to use the key to avoid having thumblers flying all over the place, besides he states that some thumblers will be stiking out wich shouldn´t happen with the original key

"This photo shows the removed cylinder. Note how some of the tumblers protrude from the cylinder with the key inserted"

I could be wrong though

...and I am :( sorry

"You are correct. Pull the tumbler out with the original key, then use your ignition key to find the right plates so as many as possible are not sticking out."

Barrel will come out without key, so long as you can get to the retaining "Tab" (as it's referred to in Pit's instructions above).
FYI. On GSA type boxes, the only problem is it needs to be "parked" in locked position (but open), so the tab is accessible, otherwise it gets a bit more difficult (but not imposible). Looking at the photo on Pit's instructions, looks like Varios don't have that problem though. As mentioned, key in is only to stop leaves popping out when barrel withdrawn.

yes thanks mate i have read that ,but it says further down the thread that the original key is needed to remove the barrel,i think maybe he dosnt have that key, just wanting to know if there is a way of getting that barrel out of its holder without that key.
cheers.
you dont need the original key , done this loads of times, use your own key.

thanks very much guys much appriated ,guess i will go round and get the box and base plate tonight.

Thats great I brought a top box 6 month ago and was using the plastic key to open it,:nenau and now done my aluminium GSA top box with my ignition key in about 15 mins; coudnt get all the plates back in but 3 plates seems to work just fine :clap:roll

I have loads of spare tumblers if you need some. Let me know the numbers you need and I'll stick them in the post ..... I'll swap them for the ones you have spare!

PM me your address and I'll stick a couple in the post :thumb2

"Sailor" sent me a couple I needed when I first bought my panniers - I've since managed to get hold of a whole range of the leaves/tumblers ....... one good turn leads to another :thumb2
If there's anyone else who needs to recode their own and wants to swap some tumblers happy to help :D.

Stu.
