My 1150GS ('03, 20k miles) has a trace of oil contamination around the shaft/final drive rubber gaitor. I first noticed this a while back (between the 12k and 18k services), and pulled the gaitor back to discover a small amount (less than a teaspoonful) of oil. Checked the gearbox and final drive oil levels, both seemed OK, so cleaned it off and kept riding.

Just checked again, oil levels still OK (final drive part way up threads - is that a fraction high, and is it enough to cause problems?). This time a small amount (less than a teaspoonful, I'd say) of water and a little bit of water/oil emulsion inside the gaitor.

Presumably not a good thing, and perhaps a sign that I need to replace the big cable tie where I've popped the gaitor off and back onto the end of the shaft housing. The old one is still in place, and looks like it's secure, but maybe I shouldn't be able to roll it on and off the end of the shaft housing?

I'm trying to work out how serious the small amount of water contamination is. Can I ignore it, other than sorting the cable tie? Should the shaft be dismantled and all bearings/joints/splines regreased? At the next service? Next convenient chance? Before I ride the bike again?
