I am looking at setting up a website but find that the "name" I want is previously registered but available for a £75 for 2 years, does this mean that after 2 years the "owner" can turn around & charge me whatever he/she feels like if I wish to renew.....thats what it looks like to me.

No, it means that after 2 years you need to renew. When you buy a domain name, it's yours, unless you stop paying.

Mike,

If you do 'buy' it, make sure you have total control over the DNS settings and don't have to rely on a faceless company to configure these for you…… Otherwise in two years time, if things go pear shaped, you’ll end up with a 'web site' that no one can access.
