Afternoon all, I asked a while ago about the best electronic ignition system to replace the Sparkrite that came on my Feb 81 built G/S when I brought it, along with the dual plug heads.

The almost unanimous advice was a Wedgetail, so I now have a dual plug version of the Wedgetail with a cable adaptor (my bike has points).

Wiring is not my strong point and I am a little confused how the bike is currently wired, hopefully one of you can help, please !

On the three pin socket built into the bike loom I have a Black, Green/Blue and Brown wire, it's the Brown wire I am confused about, it is the live feed for the Wedgetail or the trigger signal from the Bean Can, if it is the trigger then how is the Wedgetail getting power ?

Also on the DynaCoils, can anyone explain please how the grounds being linked together, and to nothing else, actually works ?

Harness adaptor.

This is what I currently have.

The socket in my loom. the black and green/blue wires have no resistance to the ones on the coils.

The wiring for the Sparkrite, the black cable plugged into the blue is the only wire coming out of the bean can

Brown wire,earth
Black wire, from ign module to coil.
Green/ yellow power supply from kill switch
Thanks for the response, so the black wire goes to both coils, and the other terminal on the coils goes to ground ?

Thanks again Mikey that makes sense, at the moment they are in series, I am minded to rewire them as parallel as there are two feeds in the loom.

Managed to get some garage time over the weekend and thanks to MikeyBoys help got the Wedgetail fitted and working, I need to make a bracket to mount the controller to the frame and do a few other jobs then hopefully can get the old girl back out on the road, and hopefully some offroad.

Finally got some time to button up the G/S and have a ride out, the unexpected sea mist put the kibosh on the views but the bike ran faultlessly and even with the default static timing ran so much better then is ever has done, and the cold starts are virtually instant, with the Acewell speedo working perfectly that should be all jobs jobbed on the G/S for a while so I can just ride and enjoy it.

Massive thanks to Mikeyboy for his patience with my coil wiring ignorance.

Hi , Help please!
Re. R100gspd
Having read all this ...still struggling to sort my connections out on my bike...Could someone please do a hand coloured wiring diagram for the wedgetail (twin spark) from the green /brown /yellow-green wires from the module connector, through the coils in parallel to out going wires ...and their connections. With all different coloured wires on the coils please... previous owner had a fondness for blue wires everywhere around the coils and dodgy connections.. .....turns over fine /good compression , new caps /ht leads. Love to get the wiring sorted correctly/correct colour/size of wire and bike sparking/ started.
Thank you in advance....Trog.

If someone has modified your loom with lots of blue wires I would suggest the wiring diagram in Haynes manual, multi-meter, pen and paper and lots of strong coffee, and make your own drawing, once you get your eye in they are easy enough to follow just takes time and patience.

I have the Clymer manual but does not show a diagram for two coils...so, asked for a simple hand drawing to show the coil connections in colour /correct wire sizes ....not to be belittled......thank you

Let's be clear here, your German bike is not designed to operate on UK domestic wiring colour codes. BMW are quite systematic in their colour coding on the bikes. Brown is always 'earth'. Red is always permanent live. Green-coded wires are switched live and the colour code is for the application. Green/Blue, for example, is the ignition-switched live for the ignition circuit.

It isn't confusing.

That I am aware off , thank you.....A simple drawing showing the coloured wires to the coils from the wedge tail connection would be most helpful to me and how the to wire up the coils correctly in parallel to make the circuit complete ... Many thanks in anticipation....

Gelandestrasse , as your in Salisbury do you fancy a ride down to Bournemouth to show me how non confusing it is....

I would, yes, but not for a fortnight as I'm on a jaunt at the moment. Standard wiring for coils is series. Danger of overload cabling in parallel if not thought through. I thought Wedgetail was plug and play but if your bike has been chopped about then it's 'all to play for'.

Standard coil wiring is green/blue to +ve on left coil, black wire on -ve of that coil goes under the frame to +ve of right coil. -ve of right coil goes to ignition sensor (also a black wire as standard).

I've not fitted a Wedgetail so can't do a diagram. I've looked at their videos (MM RIP) but can't see their cable colouring. I've fitted points, beancans, Boyer-Bransen, EME/SACHS and DYNA3 ignition systems so the Wedgetail connections can't be too different.

PM me for contact details and we'll set up a meeting. You will likely need to subscribe to do a PM

Hi,
Many thanks for coming back to me...getting a few things sorted for my project...I will give you a shout after Christmas if that's ok regarding the wiring...Best wishes & a Happy Xmas when it arrives..
