Well I’ve done it.
I’ve bought a 1300GS TE ASA Trophy, and I’m getting it next week as a Christmas present to my self especially as there are some really good deals around, because the dealers are all trying to hit the end of year target’s.
I’m still not sure if it’s to big for me or not or if I should have gone for the auto or not, who knows? Only time will tell. Because of my concern about the weight and size the first thing I’ve got to do is fit some engine bars, as I refuse to pay BMW £600 for a £200 item I can fit my self. Any recommendations as to which ones to go for and is there’s anything else I need to get to save it if I drop it?

Thanks all for your help with all the info when deciding what to do, just got to wait a week now.

SW Motech are usual my first port of call.
I see they have these

I previously sold my R1250GS due to the weight, but the R1300GS carries it's weight much better IMO and feels a lot smaller (although my dealer pointed out dimensions are very similar overall). Bars are a personal choice - I went for the Unit Garage ones in black for my Trophy. Easy to fit but are around the £275/300 mark.

My personal preference is for cylinder head covers, more discrete and do the job nicely
agree, i had a minor drop in France this year and the stainless head protectors did their job. wee buff with a Dremel and youd never know.

if you want bars I prefer subtle.

I have Touratech sports bars….. quite discreet imho…… not like the massive scaffolding sets that some have fitted….but each to their own.

Well you might void your warranty by fitting non-approved accessories ;)

I use Touratech cylinder head covers and they have proved their worth when the bike tips over. I have removed engine bars from one boxer I bought, I couldn't believe how much weight they add

This ^^^^ having had both on my 3 GS' and now 1250RS I prefer cylinder head guards too if you can get them for the 1300
I also used these (BMW version) on my 1250GS. Saved more damage from a couple of 0mph drops, but I found that each time, I subsequently got an oil leak from a crushed seal on one of the special extended valve-cover bolts. They were something like £35 each to replace. Enough to make me consider the bars next time round anyway.

Not sure if it makes any difference as I haven't dropped my 1250RS, or the 1250GS I had before it, but I have the MachineArt X heads rather than engine bars and the 2 lower mounting points are on the cylinders, the top one uses the same thread the OE spart plug cover was held on by. I had the SW Motech engine bars on my 1200s which were good, but took a lot longer to fit and subsequently remove than the X heads and I prefer the cleaner lines the X heads give, especially on the RS but each to their own

Another thing to consider if one is looking at crashbars; On bikes with the 719 head covers the stock wunderlich bars won't fit, on some bikes. Specificly the RS with 719 valve covers don't fit without a very expensive extension kit that also includes adjustable foot pegs. It seems they want you to lower the foot pegs to keep the extended crash bars from dragging ...
I just decided to rely on the factory bumpers on the 719 valve covers rather than go thru all that. The BMW folks have said the heads do hold up in at least minor crashes ...... Unfortunately I did buy the wunderlich bars that are for the RT I believe. My GS HP came with massive bars .... full protection but I bet very heavy ... The RT bars I have are stainless and seem to weigh about 20 lbs ... ouch .... and just cover the heads only of course.

I just specced the enduro pack seemed decent value for what you got and suits the trophy,in my opinion of course.
