Edinburgh is a fine city with much to commend it..with the exception of getting to it by road, or round it by road.....wonderful place to go by train.....shite roads...no good if you need to get a bike to Dalkeith, unless you are coming from the south/southwest.

Whit ur ye oan aboot - it's a doddle, maun. Get tae the brig, ontae the bypass via the new(ish) link road and yer there. Ok so it micht involve a wee bit o' fliterin' but that's hardly a hardship. The problem's in yer heid.......
Ignore my blethers... I just wanted everyone to know I was up at 4.54..(sitting out for foxes....), but I prefer to use the wee rat-run through Kirkliston and down to the ring road that way...........

Aye - you just need to watch because they've now put a 50 limit on the old A8000 from the South Queensferry to Kirkliston. All this bridge related roadwork is a pain in the arse in the car but it's not so bad on the bike as the average speed cameras can't get you.
No daft prejudice against Edinburgh. It should be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I spend much of my summer driving coach loads of visitors round it and apologising for the self inflicted chaos that blights so much of the finest routes and has done for the last 3 summers.
What I do detest is the way that local government has progressively sought to push private transport out of the city centre with parking charges and a proposed congestion charge that thankfully was rejected in a referendum. However having failed to get their way with that project they embarked on the fiasco that is the tram route likely to cost £770 million to replace part of the number 22 bus route. Roads have been dug up repeatedly in connection with the tram works and traffic diverted onto impossible local diversions.
But at least while MCE stay in Dalkeith I can avoid having to endure the centre of Edinburgh unless I am being paid to drive there. By the time the tram works are finished there will probably be no fuel left in the world to power the internal combustion engine so MCE can move their eco friendly electric powered mobility scooter workshops into the centre with impunity.
