What am I downloading?

When I opened MapSource today I got a message saying it was overdue for an update.

So, I've logged onto the myGarmin and went to the Mapping Updates pages that I've just noticed states 'latest maps and charts for units' and am currently downloading stuff (£50 ) - am I going to have to pay again for a Mapsource update?

I'd of thought so. Have you given them a credit card number yet?

I wd say map source updates are free of charge. i believe its the maps that attach to the unit that cost IMHO.

Yup - but I've typed before I fully read the instructions again

When I follow the Mapsource HELP>Check for software update path a window pops up saying there is an update of some 46 mb but that appears to be a Mapsource update not maps as such.

Maybe the download I'm going through now will update the Zumo and the PC

So your updating Mapsource not the maps, where did you get the £50 figure from in your first post?

If it is just a Mapsource update then there won't be any firmware update for your Zumo.

You update the Zumo using software called Webupdater which is a free download off the Garmin site.

I went to the Map Updates page at garmin.com - where if you enter the serial number of the unit it checks if you have the latest maps - then it was just a question of following the links, entering an order and in another 1 hour 7 minutes I should have 50 quids worth of something.

What version maps were you using before? As updating Mapsource and your unit is free, you must be unlocking the most recent maps.

I unlocked Version 10 (City Navigator 2008 I think it was called) last month and it cost me £48 IIRC.

Looking on the unit - City Navigator Europe NT V9 - the order confirmation states Map Update 2008-City Navigator Europe NT Download 010-D0026-00
so hopefully this will be version 10 - maybe.

2 and bit hours wasted - when the file finally downloaded (on HER pc) it would not run - now she thinks I've fecked up her beloved new laptop. Trying again at work - 50 quid is 50 quid. The first time using Firefox got lots of errors (java related) - now using Opera and at this rate it might have downloaded something before the next millenium!

Used to see "City Navigator Europe NT V9" on the unit now "City Navigator Europe NT 2008" - cost £50 - took about 8hrs to download (had to do it twice as the network at work crashed) - lost the maps on the Zumo once - then took another 2hrs to update the Zumo itself - hells teeth - next time I'll order the CD.

although you've had some grief with it, i'm very glad to hear that garmin are supplying mapping updates via download now.

their supplying of cd/dvds was always a bit hit and miss.

You must have a lot of patience - having said that, after first downloading the map updates and then started the upload to the unit itself (which takes about 2 hours) I had to stop the prcoess and hot the 'retransfer' button in the Opera browser i.e. start again!

Don't know what unit you have, but can't you download the maps to a CF card via a card reader? It should be quicker than sending them to the card via the unit.
