A buddy of mine is off to the Big Apple this week to take in some Baseball, while there he is seeking a digital camera.

He's asked me what's what and I've told him to stick with one that can use standard AA/AAA batteries and takes Compact Flash/Smart MEdia Cards as I've come unstuck myself by not having either of these.

What I can't help him with which is the kiddie of the moment, or the one considered best, I've told him Canon Ixus and Nikon Coolpix and he can't go wrong but not up to speed on current models.

Also any ideas of where in NY we might strike a good deal/bargain?

Andy I have an IXUS 400 which is the dogs balls but now superceded twice. Most recently by the 500. Very good cameras apart from the shutter lag. By the way it does not take normal batteries but a spare won't cost much.

There is a Yank web site called MC Neely (search for it) where I have purchased a camera before. But in situ I have no idea.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 8700, which is brilliant, whilst in NY a few weeks ago. The best deals from official agents will be at B & H, 420 Ninth Avenue, www.bhphotovideo.com , they do everything photographic and have been going for 30 odd years. The staff of 800 are very knowledgeable and mainly Orthodox Jews so he'll get some entertainment thrown in for free.
After melting his card, remember he will need passport ID for card purchases over $500, he can wander across the road to Twins Pub @ 421 Ninth and be served by the best barman in NY Doctor Bill - who won't let him leave on an odd number of drinks

You are a top man and no mistake :thumb

Nikon's are fragile and slow - don't go there.

Canon's are the boys.

I've just bought a G5 after a lot of deliberation.

Choice was between Fuji S7000 - Olympus 5060 - canon s50 and G5.

Depends what you want it for and what your aspirations are.

3.1MP is plenty good enough for web stuff.
5 MP is better for cropped shots and larger printing

small square and silver is ok for pockets, but fragile and only point-and-shoot - ok 75% time

bigger size and more features lets you have abit more creativity if you've half a clue.

The fuji s602pro on a different thread is a very good deal for the UK

My Nikon sucks

I have the nikon 4300 - they are shite! Don't know if the bigger models are any better but the focus is poor and they are pretty slow processing the images.

Something simple, practical is the Canon A80, can't go wrong. You can pick them up here for about £199 now. The canon have the advantage of taking movie(mpeg's) with sound where the Nikon is no sound.

Canon is the way to go

Hey Mr. Judge,

Tell your friend to go for a Canon – best photo/video equipment around. Just remember that Canon brand the Ixus as Elph in the US – some module numbers are also different.

Last month I bought the Elph S410 (aka the Isux 430 in the rest of the world). And it is an excellent camera – pocket size and tons of functions. I also looked at the IXUS 500 but the price/functionality was not worth it at the time – Prices drop very quickly and maybe he can get a better deal this month.

I also have the Canon Rebel (aka the Canon 300D) It is also an excellent camera but not pocket size.

The best place to do research for a camera before buying is at www.dpreview.com It truly is the best camera/consumer web site around.

B&H photo video – is definitely the way to go they are just round the corner from Madison Square Gardens/Penn Station – It’s the cheapest place in the whole of NYC – Guaranteeeeeeeeed!!!!!!

I've used a Canon S45 and, latterly, an S50 (bought from a dealer in NY by mail order, who probably matches CTFT's description - clue - they weren't open on Saturday) after someone broke the LCD screen on the S45.

My criteria for the camera for my trip was it had to be small and light enough that I would never be tempted to say "Oh, it's too much trouble taking the camera today".
It doesn't take AA or AAA batteries, but I have a spare and the small charger recharges them in about 45mins. I'm pleased with the pics it takes...

Mike:)

fuji finepix s5000 gets my vote, and its only £250 at most duty frees, its kind of slr styled, but the zooooom lens is excellent

OK Andy here is another one, underwater divers prefer Ricoh as it has the quickest shutter system... My ixus 400 is great but it has a slow shutter, but by all accounts not as slow as a Nikon...

Canon from B&H

He realy HAS to decide what he needs most, 'cos they are VERY good at B&H in talking you up to an 8 megapixel digital SLR!!

Best pics - G5 (but bulky)
Good compromise - A80 (twisty LCD)or S60 (neat clamshell)
Small - s410 (neat)

Direct to digital camera page here.

Knowing my buddy he would have walked straight in there and asked for the model I had reccommended, and as long as it was cheaper than the best UK price I would find he would buy it there and then, some while later he would have thought back to the shop and been impressed by the sheer scale of it but not ever would they have convinced him to buy-up the range.

Had a text to say he did just that, in and out in 10 minutes A80 and 256MB card in hand, had that been me I'd have been in for hours!! :D
