What Helmet?

Coming from the sporting world, I was wondering what helmets people wear when riding these beasts?

I have a good textile suit which I use for work etc so this is ideal, Putting away my Power ranger leathers and will contiunue to use my Arai lid for awhile.

The Arai is coming up to replacement time so what does one recommend?

I used a Schuberth S2 for about 110,000 miles. Nice and quiet.
Changed it in the summer for a Schuberth C3 (I think). The flip one. Not as quiet as the S2 but not as loud as my prevous Caberg helmets.

When the C3 is due for replacement I'll probably go back to a full face for the extra quietness again.

It's all a matter of taste though.

I like Schuberth because they are quiet and have the internal sun visor which is very important to me - why oh why do all of my jobs involve commuting west to east and back again?

thats one of the reasons my Arai is due a replacement. it's very noisy but very comfy. On the sports bike I liked to listen to the bike so didn't matter but now with more commuting and hopefully a spot of touring I don't want all the wind noise

When you do, rush around the shop a lot to replicate the passage of air over your melon case.

If you want to go all Charlie and Ewan, then go for an Arai Tour-X or a Shoei Hornet. However, the peaks cause noise and vibes and they are a bit of a waste unless you intend to do any greenlaning.

Schuberth helmets seem to fit Arai-shaped heads well and Schuberth make the current BMW System 6 helmet that is worth a look as a decent flip-face but about £100 cheaper than the C3.
Apart from that, anything else that fits properly and has the right certifications.

Yup, that's right. YOU go into shops and YOU try as many as possible on.

YOU then settle on the one that suits YOUR head, YOUR wallet, YOUR likely usage and not least, that all important 'style'* which YOU are obviously desperate to achieve.

Which is fine, until you do this and then find that the visor flips wide open everytime you do a lifesaver, or the fit/padding distorts at over 50mph or it leaks water down inside the visor when it rains.....

And on the subject of being able to see in the rain ..... having just been through another hour of horrendous rain, does anyone have a helmet they would really recommend? My current favourite is a Schuberth J1, which is certainly much better than a Schuberth S1 Pro, Arai Quantum or Shoei Raid 2, but it is still not great.

I bought a C3 but really didn't get on with it. For me I found it had a pressure point in the middle of my forehead which left a pefectly square red mark when I took it off. I also found that the holes for the ears were not the right shape and pressed the lower part of my ears against my head which became uncomfortable after a while.

Just bought a Shoei Neotec and love it. C3 is definately well made, but so is the Neotec - and for me the fit is way better.

Different shaped lids suit different shaped heads.

i.e. You might have a BMW shaped head and chin or an arai head and chin etc etc .
So taking advice on what lid to use isn't really much help.

If its of any use - I bought an Arai Quantum this year to replace my (very old) Arai - I reckon they have inproved in every respect and are still as comfortable for my shape of head.

Did try a Shoei years ago - very well made helmet but an awful fit for me. Just shows how personal the whole fit thing is.

Mine is about three years old now but almost worn everyday. good old Arai Condor. its ok but not as nice as my old Arai.

Off to the bike shop in Swindon Sunday to try some on. mega motorcycle store in Swindon seem to have helmets bursting out of the doors.
