Does anyone know what this socket is on an 1150 Adveture? I assume it should have a cover on it?

No cover neccessary.

It's for the optional Red Arrow Detector.

If you had one fitted, it would have spotted that arrow lurking beside the seat!

(They were deleted from UK Spec bikes because their was a danger of the detector being set off by the RAF Display Team of the same name).

To the best of my knowledge, that is a connector for a CO (carbon monoxide) Potentiometer. If you remove the lambda probe to fit an aftermarket exhaust, you can plug in a potentiometer (available from BMW) there to set your CO at idle.
Your bike has its own lambda probe so doesn't need a CO pot.

Confirmed by dealer today, a redundant item not required on later bikes.

Seems a lot more likely back there........same place and similar plug to the 1150 version which defionately IS the charcoal can connection.

erm, that is an 1150 - you can tell by the huge "1150" sticker shown in the pic
