Has anyone tried to re-lace their spoke wheels on an 1100GS?

I am considering stripping mine and having the hubs and rims powder coated but have heard some horror stories about re-building them.

Only ever maintained rather than rebuilt, so can't really comment on the difficulty level BUT....... your local offroad specialist should have a wheel builder on hand if you decide not to risk it.

I've only done traditional wheels as the bmw ones are a total nightmare. If you strip yours and do what you have to do then send them to the Devon Rim company for them to lace them back up I think this would be your best option.

I'm almost done with mine while the rims are at powdercoating as we speak. Getting the old spokes out is a major nightmare. It took me quite some time with lots of penetrating oil and heat to get the spokes loose. Here's after beadblasting: http://pilt.delfi.ee/my_picture/15319743/

I would have also preferred to send them to a specialist but here we hardly have any.

Send them to Devon Rim! You have to get the new stainless spokes from them anyway.

If you're replacing the spokes you may as well cut the old ones out with angle grinder. Same as Ant1967, I rebuilt ordinary wheels no problem but been wary of BMW type ones as consensus is they are difficult to true up.

Bolt cutters are a better weapon. Quick, safe, no sparks.

I was talking about this to Johno at Adventure Bike Warehouse, If a rim isn't laced back up correct and the offset isn't quite correct, the vibration will destroy the rear hub bearings.
Just a word of advice, is to get some one who knows how to do Bmw wheels.:thumb2
