Hi all:

Today I replaced my brake discs with some nice new Moto-Masters wavey discs (pics 2mora) and some new pads. While I was at it I finally replaced the bearings front and rear too (I took them all the way to Mongolia and Siberia and never needed them)... they started getting a tiny bit notchy but they've done quite well I reckon: at least 42k miles, maybe another 25k if the previous owner didn't change them.

Anyway, I noticed the hubs are looking a little worse for wear with some corrosion and plastic powder coat peeling. The rims and spokes are okay (little scratched up but nothing to cry about) - this bike has been used.

Question: Is it better to replace the wheels or just get them refurbished?

I was thinking of stripping the hubbs down and getting them blasted and repowder coated then getting them remounted.

I've heard Woody's Wheels in the US are good but they're a bit far away, LOL. Is there someone like that in the UK that you lot might recommend. If they're being refurbished, may as well get them to beef up the mounting too.

All relevant ideas welcome.

I used Hagons as they are only 30 mins up the road from me, to rebuilds a front F650GS wheel they desolved the plastic-coated hub then powder coated that and the rim to match and blend in with the F800 GS rear wheel (as they was silver) then respoked in heavy duty stainless steel with nickel niples :D

here is there link, if you click on the wheel sections there is a large listing of costs.

maybe you could provide a better rim for them to build it , less cheese something like an excel rim

I'm sure there is a nearer wheel builder to your neck of the woods if you choose the wheel build option :beerjug:

I too used Hagons when rebuilding my R100GS-PD. They beadblasted and lacquered the hubs, had the rims professionally polished then rebuilt the wheels with s/s spokes. Within a months the spokes in the front wheel had slackened off so I need to return to them and they were retightened. It seems spokes do stretch so often need re-tensioning. From memory, £400ish for both wheels and I supplied the Motorworks s/s spokes.

Where did you get the discs from and how much? mine need replacing and don`t see the point of replacing them with the same if they are going to get loose on the bobbins again:nenau

Thanks, I'll try Hagons.

My thoughts exactly, an the OEM are expensive.

I got them from Off Road Only. I first saw them on the Wunderlich website.

112108 = £109.95 + vat
112109 = £109.95 + vat
110343 = £68.40 + vat

I paid £345.96 all in! The shipping was free because it was over £100. I recommend new bolts unless your current ones are still in decent condition - mine were a rusty mess. You should fit them with new pads, mine were ready for a change anyway.

Off Road Only don't routinely stock them but they will get them in for you - they're the UK dealer for Moto-Master products.

Contact Ady and tell him I sent you.

Hope this helps.
