oil
had this same problem lately, with which oil to use in a 02 gs with 4000 miles, been doing short trips and the oil was black, three dealers gave different oil 's to use from mineral to fully synth, so I used Putoline oil, the lower based synth fortifued , about 16% addatives, when its got more miles then I will go to the semi (45%), Putoline is the only (as far as I know) oil developed just for bikes, with still being in the running in stage, car oil or a lot of ranges have an S property in which is good for slip, but not so good if you have a wet starter and clutch, as I found when I had a Gilera RC600 which performed like a nail untill I used Putoline.
When I asked BM about oil they replied,
Thank you for your recent mail regarding oils suited to your BMW R1150GS.
I wish to confirm that 10/40 oil is as recommended in the owners manual is
recommended, but if you were doing long journeys e.g. France etc you may
wish to choose a 20/50 mineral oil. I would also advise you that we
recommend Castrol.
