White Horse Historical Tour Sunday 11th May 2008

Clive
Metisse and I confirmed for Sunday, see you in Hungerford.

FWIW I dont think the Karoo Ts wear well if its rocky, mine are half worn in way under 1k miles, about 300 on tracks. Maybe they go down a bit quick and then seem to even off, I dont know.

Anyway, Clive thanks for the info on trailer parking etc but I will drop out for this year. See you at some point soon.

It is fairly easy going. Especially if it stays dry :)
Hi Clive, it's TJ, Simons mate from the King William pub. Got my Suzuki up and running and have been dragged thru some mud by Simon. Is this gonna be ok for real off-road virgin?

Into Bath today, via the scenic "running-in mode" route, so a vague excuse for a recce :)

The first Byway - the start, down the hill to the middle and the end. A few small potholes and puddles, loose gravel/stones and some washout near the end but firm going and (currently) easy enough on Tourances.

Roundway Down byway. Start, middle and end. Those who had problems last year, will be pleased to know the central stretch has been graded and is (currently) easy enough on Tourances.

Hi TJ, welcome to UKGSer.

If you have been though some mud with Simon, I'd imagine you'd be fine, unless we get a lot of rain before Sunday :augie

See photos above - can't be easier unless it was tarmac ;)

The only one to possibly avoid might be the Ridgeway, but you'll have done the easier ones by then and have your confidence, so see how it goes on the day.

Thanks Clive - compared to what Simon & Dave dragged me through last weekend, this looks a breeze (ha, pride cometh before a fall - that's blown it then!)

See ya Sunday! I'll be the one shaking with nerves and stalling my poor Suzuki all over the place.

White Horse historical tour - 11.5.08

Bit late, but I will be there on Sunday if there is still room.On Tourances and never taken the GS off-road before, but quite used to off road on more suitable machinery, so will have a go and hope that there will be others to assist when needed !!.

Clive .. just to clarify .. if I have GPS machine then I am ok for the road ride??

Do I still need to buy a map?

Looking to barge in

Mind you there's a Barge Inn by the canal at Trowbridge.
I'm booked up in the morning but would like to join up at Silbury Hill if that's OK. Of course if I miss you it's my problem- don't wait. I'll be coming from the west, & should be able to be there at 11.30, which should meet you. Standardish 1200 on Tourances but tighter mudguards, so I'll give it a miss if it's been raining. Presumably you're stopping at the layby just south of Silbury Hill? Look forward to meeting.
Trevor

Just checking as that petrol station was not too big .. thought you might have changed the meeting point to accommodate the numbers.
I've lost count now, but you may have a point :)

Hopefully people will use their common sense - if the garage forecourt/backyard fills up, or the owner has a bit of a fit - there is a layby a couple of hundred yards away on the A4 towards Newbury - I'll check there for people when we leave at 10am.

If you have loaded the Mapsource file I posted somewhere on the thread you'll be fine without a map.

The main ones will be SC008, SC012, SC014, 160 Hackpen White Horse & 170 Barbury Castle i.e. the ones at the end of byway sections.

I'll have a map anyway, if your GPS (and the two backups you carry) fail ;)

Bring a good book to read then ;)

Difficult to say, of course, as things never go to plan, but we are not likely to be at Silbury until 1:00pm ish.
At 11.30 I'd guess we will be leaving the Plain on our way towards Westbury White Horse :nenau

Never mind maps - is anyone bring any oil? And if so, what kind?

And what about a toolkit? I'm tempted to bring a 1/2" drive torque wrench and 2' breaker bar, just in case like.......

Do we park in front of, against or behind the lorry???

I couldn't get a decent zoom in, so I've just been to check and the lorry has gone. The big red arrow is still there though, so somewhere close to the point of it would be favourite (parking at 45º mind)

Then lets hope no-one steals the red arrow in the mean time. :blast

See you there......

A quick count from the thread, PMs and phone calls - I make it 41 people so far, including a few pillions

I'm unlikely to be able to explain to everyone personally before we start out, so I'll give a quick run down here and hopefully someone can pass the info on to anyone who doesn't read this :)

Can those not "bywaying" let me know on Sunday morning, so I know how many to wait for at the end of a byway. Sorry, but you'll have to look after yourselves as far as navigation goes.

Due to the numbers attending we won't be able to stop for very long at some of the sites due to limited safe parking so anyone who wants to take photos will have to be ready for a quick stop, snap away, then move on...

We will be leaving through Hungerford town centre heading towards Burbage.

About 6 miles outside Hungerford you'll see Wilton Windmill up on the hill to the right. Give it a wave.

A mile after turning left at Burbage roundabout, we'll peel off the road into a layby on the right - this is the start of the first byway.
Those not bywaying, will need to carry on for several miles to meet us at the end.

3 miles from the end of that byway, a quick stop at the side of the road (although there is a very small parking area), behind you up on the hill is Pewsey White Horse, although it may be hard to spot since it doesn't appear to have been cleaned recently.

Several miles later, a quick stop at the side of the road, Alton Barnes White Horse, easy to see, is on your right.

12 miles later we'll have a longer stop at Woodhenge to regroup.

A couple of miles later, a quick stop on the byway alongside Stonehenge. We'll head down a short byway, then a few miles of tarmac, then across the plain (potholed but easy byway). A quick stop, part way to take a look at the broken tanks. Then a longer stop at the top of Lavington Hill to regroup.
Those not bywaying, will need to meet us at the top of Lavington Hill, just to the SE of Market Lavington.

8 miles later, quick stop at Westbury White Horse, then a U-turn and on to Caen Hill Locks. There is very limited parking at the lower end of the locks, so we'll probably have to use the proper carpark at the top of the locks - I think that might be pay-and-display, so we won't be stopping long ;)

3 miles on, Devizes White Horse, photos probably best taken at the bottom of the hill, before we get to the start of the Roundway Down byway - a quickish stop, for anyone wants to stand on the horse's eye.
Those not bywaying, will need to meet us at the other end, which is just before a Golf Club.

4 miles on, a quick stop at Cherill White Horse, then another 4 miles on to Silbury Hill to regroup.

Then on to the Sanctuary and the start of the Ridgeway byway section. Waving at Avebury Stone Circle which will be a distance away over on the left. Those not bywaying, will need to make their way to Hackpen White Horse via Avebury village - a few hundred meters up the hill from the horse, is a parking area with the Ridgeway running through it. Some of the Ridgeway from the Sanctuary can be tricky so might be a bit of a wait ;)

From Hackpen to Barbury Castle is more (easy) Ridgeway, then a bit more (easy) Ridgeway across to Chisledon.

Then the final 10 miles to Uffington and an ice-cream. Hooray.

White Horse

Make that 43 going as I will be there and am hopefully bringing a mate on his XT660 (trying to convert him to a GS). Very much looking forward to it after last years do and have now done the off road skills course so have a bit more of an idea what I'm doing (only a bit though).

Clive
