Who has the highest mileage F800?

Thanks Micky..
When you replaced the stator, was the voltage rectifier replaced ?
Mines done 67,000 now and clutch started slipping, on s couple of overtakes, on return from Portsmouth ferry this afternoon

Yes, t'is the recommended thing to do. If it's a failed rectifier that caused the stator to go then it'll destroy the new one too :blast

Clutch slip? .... again, mine's never needed any adjustment. You do need some free play in the cable up at the lever :thumb

New clutch fitted and it's happy, a doddle to do.
The friction plates were on the service limit and the metal plates had started to discolour from the slippage.

116,000 miles now :D

Although a fork seal let go last week while in France/Belgium, so will be fitting fork oil seals, dust covers and head bearings this next week :thumb

About 125,000 miles now. Odometer is showing about 120,000 but it missed 5 or 6 weeks of miles due to an ABS Canbus fault (s/h ABS pump obtained from Sherlocks).
On 4th stator (1 replacement then 2 rewinds) - they get HOT! The paint on the engine cover over the stator has been cooked to a matt finish.
Replaced clutch and cam chain w/tensioners in the last few months but interestingly, have not replaced steering bearings for a long time.
Sometimes uses a little oil but only after sustained high speed motorway use.
Fuel consumption still averaging 60 mpg which includes some "generous" motorway speed!

Hi Rick,

I suspect i'm coming up to a stator replacement and you seem to have gotten through a few - have you replaced the R/R? I'm considering going over to series or MOSFET just wondering if anyone this side of the pond had done the change...

Best,

S

Hi Smythson,

I did replace the R/R once as it was the done thing to do. The first thing I would do though is check all the connectors on the charging circuit and wire in a voltmeter to the battery either with an isolating switch or via an ignition activated relay to keep an eye on charging level (14-14.5 volts)
There is clearly an overheating issue as BMW redesigned the rotor to provide extra cooling.
I thought about a switching/circuit breaker R/R but didn't think there was enough info/feedback.
I suppose we could just do the maths and work out just how much extra leccy power we actually need then get the stator rewound for less output??

Thanks Rick,

Ferrol very kindly forwarded me the info on charging so i've ordered a voltmeter to leave installed.

I'm with you on the rewound idea in terms of physics but that's a bit beyond my maths ability. From what i've read series R/R's take more heat away from the stator (reflected in the larger size of them) and only draw when needed (i think - still studying) but on the other hand mosfet have a proven track record. I suspect i've plenty more research to do!

BMW will only quote the stator as a kit inc the rotor at just over £600 so i'l definitely be going for a rewind on that. OEM RR is just over £100 so about the same as a good series or mosfet RR. I may have a tour coming up so will look to sort before then and will post up results.

On an aside - I don't suppose you have an old stator you'd like to sell? It'd save me taking my bike off the road whilst it's rewound...

Best,

S

I've an old stator that could be rewound .... but I wouldn't even bother. Come and collect and you can have it :rob

116,000 miles and one new stator, maybe due for another one soon, dunno, can't see the problem you lot seem to be having :D

2009 f658 with 132,200 miles. Two stators, and that's all for engine. Steering head bearings and rear wheel bearings for the rest. Still on original fork seals, clutch and water/oil pump. Clean fork tubs and apply rainX to tubs.

I think you're ahead & that's more than Micks

Good to see these are reliable

Now down in the Süd Schwarzwald. Temperatures around zero and snow flurries

Superb! I have just bought a new one so only 335 miles but will be going up!

Only 52,000 on my wife's 800 but I think the stator has just gone - on the last day of Bilco's trip - it will be a rewind and new rectifier job. Other than a set of head bearings it's been fine - 2009, best year I think :D
