DSC00470.JPG

Question - can I top up the oil and forget about it?

if so - which oil should I use  (all answers on a postcard to Tarka :green gri )

if not - what will I need to do and how much will it cost?

Kenneth,

looks like final dive seal failure or someone's had a squirty all over your backend.:ymca

It will probably be very expensive to clear your mess up so might I suggest taking the bus to work from now on.

Yes

Yes, for a while (although mine didn't look as bad as yours  )

RTFM - some weird shite that was hard to get hold of - I managed to blag 1/2 a litre from a BMW card dealers (used in the the transmission IIRC) - probably still got some left somewhere if you need it.

if not - what will I need to do and how much will it cost?
There was a post not that long ago (which I can't locate now) that mentioned seal replacement in situ - supposed to use special tool but someone did it with a bent nail or summat. I presume it is just oil seepage and not any free play in the bearing?

EDIT - my whole final drive was replaced under warranty (twice) as the bearings were also shagged

That happened to me whilst driving from north coast of scotland to cornwall... spotted it on a cigarette break in manchester...assist recovery to dealership...dealer said they'd sort it- ended up with a whole new swing arm and final drive unit as they did not have the tools available to fix it! (final drive seal)- BMW told me on the phone that the unit was sealed for life and would need replacing- never thought i'd get a spangly new swing arm out of it though! (warranty covered)- claim on it, thats my advice- good luck

Sorry to see that, mines just started going the same way at 28,000 miles.

Not as bad as yours (for the moment) so I'm ignoring it.....................for now :(

Seems to be a common problem with 1200s.

I met 'Wideload' in the IoM last week and his seal was leaking oil, not as bad as yours though Ken, (he's now going back to an 1150:P )

Just hope it never causes an accident with oil on the tyre:eek:

On the subject of ignoring it, i think I saw a thread/pictures once on Adv rider about one catching fire, not pretty.

Yep i've had a look again, but can't find the article, i'd guess it ran low on oil, overheated and set alight to the seals/paint:nenau

At the speed it's coming out I don't think it matters :P

Bummer. Can't wait for mine to go :blast

-Did this happend when you was out with your son? If so he had too much for breakfast that day! ;)
You better give him a Scarver - those weak GSers are to weak for two persons. :P

Several options:

Bike in Warranty: No problem, get dealer to sort it.

Bike Just Outside Warranty: If bike has FSH from BMW and you are friendly with your dealer, discuss a 'goodwill gesture'. I got my rear drive replaced in this manner (By SPC, now under new management trading as Bahnstormer Motorrad) though my oil leak was from the input seal to the FD and not the main spindle seal. Apparently BMW can't provide the special tools needed for dealers to fix the FD so they just swap out the FD.

No joy from Dealer: Check for sideplay in spindle bearings. If none evident, remove the plastic trim disk over the seal, drill two small holes into the backing material of the rubber seal with a cordless drill, then screw in two stout self tapping screws. Pull the seal out using grips/pliers on the seal and fit a replacement seal using a piece of pipe or a home made tool if you know anyone with a lathe, or you could just carefully drift it into place with a flat ended punch and hammer by dressing around the seal.

If your bearings are shot, maybe take the FD off the bike and show it to a local gearbox repair company and ask for a quote. A professional gearbox recon outfit will probably have the tooling required to undo castellated nuts etc and set the required preload after a bearing change.

Good luck with the repairs, it looks like you can't just ignore that one, it ain't gonna go away by itself.

Oil is Castrol SAF-XO and can be bought from dealers in 1 litre bottles, I saw some recently at Bahnstormer Motorrad.
