Why buy a 1200GSA?

Can't comment on the 12GSA, as I've only ever ridden a standard 12GS for any length. I've taken a brand new 12GS on extended "test rides" each year since the launch in 2004 and each ride was for more than 3000 miles. I've only ever had two predictable failures, :augie the EWS ring antenna failed on one occasion and the only other failure was a fuel pump controller. As an aside, I usually ride for about 6000 miles each year (over 30000 miles so far) on these "test rides" and I've only ever had one puncture, but fixed loads for other folks. :D

I thought at the time the 2009 GS was the best I'd ever ridden, until I took the 2010 GS for a 3000 mile trip earlier this year. Wow.......I nearly traded in my HP2 Enduro for one.......that is until I came to my senses. ;)

So, the 2010 GS is the best yet! And far better than my lardy 1150GSA which I sold in 2005. :P

Yes - a VERY predictable contribution - but my 2010 model is quicker than my 2008 model ...... so (my) personal experience doesn't bear out the first part of your statement. :nenau

As for your other point I simply don't know. :aidan

Predictable.......................surely some mistake:blast

On the speed front, I know not..................but it was reported on here, that in a testing situation, the 2010 had been found wanting in comparision to the earlier ones......................having ridden the 2010 RT, I don't buy it either

Reliability...................who knows, but you would think that they would heave perfected the twincam engine already (albeit in a small number of R12HP2 Sports:blast)...................before launching it and having to rush out a special tool................to shim the cams up correctly:rolleyes:

Maybe after spending all that money.......................you're having to justify that the bike is spot on.......................to yourself and everyone else:augie

My perception of the 2010 bikes performance was that it wasn't quite as brisk as my 2008 bike but it was noticeably smoother running.

OP

I've done over 50k on a 1200GS/1200Adv with no FD failures.

Try one. You might like it :thumb and err... remember to change your name to Micheal R1200GS Adventure when you eventually trade up. :thumb2

Johnny....................etc said:

No mistake.

But please do post up a pic of your colonic sorry 'iconic' 1150Adv that normally materializes in this sort of thread. I've forgotten what it looks like. :D

Why, indeed? :nenau

I agree. I was on the absolute verge of buying one, but after seeing so many negative posts on every Beemer forum, I didn't go through with it. I'm incredibly glad now that I didn't. :rob

110,000 fault free miles on 1200s is the only justification I need .............. to myself and everybody else. :)

It seems that all modern GS's )or any model) are a gamble the quality has gone down hill to sell at a price.
the 1200GSA wilbjr21 rode has never had a problem. but I had a new 2007 1200GSA and was recovered 6 times in less than a year maybe they used all the faulty parts up on my bike! I know others with similar stories on the 1200GSA

Tried to exchange for a KTM but got offered poor PX value so I changed to an 800GS because i couldn't afford to lose any more money on trade ins the 800 GS has a reputation on the forums of poor quality but I have never had a problem in 20,000 miles and still ride it like i stole it as i did with the GSA.
The other week I saw a R1200RT with less then 1000 miles on with an oil seal on the rear drive leaking.
IMHO you can either get a good one or a bad one of any new model you pays your money and takes your choice
Johnnyboxer is right the last quality GS or probably any model made was the R1100GS

would that would be the one with the cracking gearbox case with exploding internals and porous petrol tank? :augie

Good day for fishing:augie................Wilbjr and Tricky - no pics, you know what a quality bike looks like:D

Now, you know that was only if used in hard offroad conditions, to which the 1150 and 1200 GS have similar weaknesses with the chassis.........Show me a plastic tank from that era, that didn't lose its stickers:rolleyes:.........Metal Petrol tanks were fine:D

I was interested to read in this months classic bike mag an article by a guy called bob porecha who states faults on BMW bevel boxes since a redesign in '81, and now almost 30 years on we're all surprised when they go pop

WHY ?

Bad start to the morning... was seriously thinking about chopping in my 1150GSA for the 12...
How many threads are there now about flaming final drive failures..?

All I can think to myself when thinking about changing is NOOOOOOOO.

I worried about the FD on mine (etc), but I can't help but feel I should get back into a happy place with a different brand that I just dont have this type of apparantly extraordinarily show stopping poor quality issue.

Some of the sufferings a considerable number of fellow GSERS are experiencing just doesnt seem right and that's just the people on this forum...

Am I just a victim of forum doom and gloom, bad news travels faster than good etc??

:(

I keep thinking the same then go for a ride on my 1150GSA and then think

W H Y ? :blast

I've owned it for 3 yrs NEVER a fault but I still keep thinking:aidan

I think you're over thinking it, I've done 37,000 miles in just over 2 and a half years (some of it pretty hazardous terrain), I've had a weepy FD and a new shock in that time.....the bike's are brilliant....:beerjug:

Hi,
What do you want, my Yam XJ9 was everything I wanted, served me well, 70,000 miles of love, My wife only gave me half that.

GSA still good, no FD problems at all , had a few problems with the Honda CX breaking divs and cam chains.

Stick with what you love and enjoy.

Don't worry too much. Have a 2008 GSA and had no problems. Modifications done on the request of Herr BMW himself were: Software update, Brake lines, EWS ring antenna, "Storspannungen im Bordnetz-kondensator". None of the mods caused me any discomfort, but were done during standard maintenance service.
